The 2026–27 Barclays Women’s Super League returns with a new champion and a new format. Manchester City ended a ten-year wait for the title—and Chelsea’s six-season reign—while the league has expanded from 12 to 14 clubs for the first time. Birmingham City, Crystal Palace and Charlton Athletic have joined a competition that will now feature 26 matchweeks and 182 fixtures. There is also greater jeopardy at the bottom: 14th place means automatic relegation, while the team finishing 13th must defend its place in a play-off.

The season opens under the Friday-night lights with London City Lionesses against Manchester United. London City were the talk of last summer’s transfer market before setting a new points record for a promoted club and finishing sixth in their first WSL campaign. They have since added Kadidiatou Diani, Mapi León, Rosa Kafaji and Alexia Putellas—a two-time Ballon d’Or winner who left Barcelona after 14 years, 232 goals and 38 trophies. United, meanwhile, begin a new era after replacing Marc Skinner with Eva Olid, who led Hearts to their first Scottish league title.

The excitement is already visible beyond the pitch. London City have sold out their full-season-ticket allocation, Chelsea will play all 13 league matches at Stamford Bridge for the first time, and Arsenal will again play their full campaign at the Emirates. The WSL attracted 902,981 spectators last season, so the expanded fixture list should take it beyond one million. But the headline number is not the real test: what matters is whether average crowds grow, seats are consistently filled and the opening-week excitement lasts until May.

The headline match

London City Lionesses v Manchester United

London City’s first WSL home meeting with Manchester United ended in a bruising 5–1 defeat. Five months later, they led at Leigh and pushed United until Millie Turner’s 79th-minute header completed a narrow 2–1 comeback. Now, after an ambitious summer, London City will believe the gap between the teams has closed too.

Despite United winning both meetings last season, 7–2 on aggregate, our model makes London City slight favourites this time, giving them a 44% win probability. Home advantage helps, but the biggest change is personnel: Alexia Putellas and Kadidiatou Diani bring greater invention and finishing, while Mapi León strengthens the defence. London City may now have the quality to turn last season’s encouraging performance into a different result.

Chelsea v Aston Villa

Chelsea have won all 12 of their WSL meetings with Aston Villa, but the contest became considerably less comfortable last season. After winning 3–1 at Villa Park, Chelsea needed Sjoeke Nüsken’s late goal to survive a seven-goal thriller at Kingsmeadow. Villa scored three times and remained level until the 82nd minute in a 4–3 defeat.

That reminder of Villa’s threat makes Chelsea’s short turnaround worth watching. They come into the season opener after securing their place in the Champions League league phase, beating Real Sociedad 1–0 in Spain to seal a 6–2 aggregate win. It is a positive start, but the midweek trip adds an early test of freshness and rotation before Villa arrive at Stamford Bridge.

Our model still makes Chelsea clear favourites, giving them a 60% win probability. Their territorial dominance and home advantage provide a powerful foundation, but this is also the beginning of a new chapter: Chelsea start their attempt to reclaim the title at Stamford Bridge, now their permanent league home, following significant summer turnover. Villa’s performance in March showed that the historical record does not guarantee another routine afternoon.

Brighton v Arsenal

Arsenal won the first league meeting between these sides last season, but Brighton turned the rivalry around in the spring. They knocked the Gunners out of the FA Cup with a 2–0 win at Meadow Park, then held them 1–1 at Broadfield—a result that ended Arsenal’s title challenge. Returning to the same ground only four months later, Brighton know they can frustrate them again.

The test now comes amid a sudden managerial change. Brighton announced Dario Vidošić’s departure little more than a week before the season opener, ending a spell in which he had helped turn the Seagulls into a side capable of troubling the league’s elite. The club moved quickly to appoint Arturo Ruiz, but Arsenal will be the first test of how smoothly that transition can land.

Our model nevertheless makes Arsenal strong favourites, giving them a 67% win probability. That reflects the season-long difference in attacking pressure, while the summer arrivals add even greater control and progression to an already dominant midfield. Brighton’s recent success makes this more dangerous than an ordinary top-versus-mid-table fixture, but Arsenal possess the quality to turn territorial control into a much better result this time.

Tottenham Hotspur v West Ham United

Tottenham completed a derby double over West Ham last season, but neither victory came easily. Bethany England’s 86th-minute penalty settled the opener 1–0 before Spurs came from behind to win the return 2–1. The player who gave West Ham the lead that afternoon, Shekiera Martinez, has since crossed London to join Tottenham—adding another edge to an already competitive rivalry.

Our model makes Spurs slight favourites with a 43% win probability, but West Ham remain close behind on 31%—the narrowest gap between the two leading outcomes on opening weekend. Home advantage and Tottenham’s fifth-place finish give them the edge, while the arrivals of Martinez and Kirsty Hanson have refreshed their attack. However, last season’s two one-goal contests suggest this derby could again be decided by a single moment.

Hanson produced those numbers for Aston Villa last season and has already scored for Spurs in preseason. Alongside former Hammer Martinez, she gives Tottenham considerably more pace, movement and finishing in attack.

Charlton Athletic v Liverpool

Charlton’s first BWSL match takes them back to the ground where promotion was secured in unforgettable fashion. Their play-off against Leicester finished goalless after extra time before Sophie Whitehouse saved four penalties to send the Addicks up. Now the division’s newest side must test that defensive resilience against established top-flight opposition.

Our model makes Liverpool favourites with a 47% win probability, but this is far from a comfortable away call. The Reds finished 11th last season but arrive with renewed momentum after winning all five preseason matches, including a 2–1 victory over Manchester United. Charlton’s organisation and home support explain the weekend-high 30% draw probability—and could make Liverpool work considerably harder than the difference in divisions suggests.

Crystal Palace v Everton

When Palace last competed in the BWSL, they held Everton 1–1 at Sutton before losing the return match 3–0 on Merseyside. Relegation followed, but the Eagles responded immediately: Jo Potter’s side secured promotion at the first attempt and now begin their return against familiar opposition.

Our model makes Everton favourites with a 42% win probability, reflecting their established top-flight level and eighth-place finish last season. Palace’s home-win and draw probabilities are identical at 29%, however, showing how unsettled the contest remains. Their promotion momentum—and the arrival of proven BWSL goalscorer Bethany England—gives the Eagles considerably more reason for optimism than they carried into their previous top-flight campaign.

Manchester City v Birmingham City

This is champions versus champions: Manchester City begin their WSL title defence against a Birmingham side returning to the top flight after winning WSL2. The teams met as recently as April, when Bunny Shaw’s eighth-minute goal was all that separated them in a hard-fought 1–0 FA Cup quarter-final. Birmingham therefore arrive with more reason for belief than the probabilities suggest.

Our model nevertheless makes City the weekend’s strongest favourites, giving them an 83% win probability. The champions retain an attack led by Shaw, while Birmingham face a significant step up despite adding proven top-flight experience such as Millie Turner. The likely winner may appear clear; the more interesting question is how City reshape their attack following Kerolin’s move to Barcelona.

Kerolin supplied nine goals and five assists last season. City still possess exceptional attacking depth, but this match offers the first competitive evidence of how those minutes and chances will be redistributed.

Arsenal lead the title race, while London City and Chelsea are almost inseparable in the race for a top-three finish.

Arsenal enter the 2026–27 season as the clear favourites in our model, winning the league in 74.7% of 10,000 simulated seasons. Manchester City are the only serious title challenger at 19.6%, with every other club below 3%.

The race for the top three is much closer. London City Lionesses have a 45.5% chance of finishing there, only 0.6 percentage points ahead of Chelsea at 44.9%. At the other end of the table, Birmingham City face the greatest danger, with a 39.3% chance of automatic relegation and a 63.9% chance of finishing in the bottom two.

Arsenal and Manchester City form the leading pair, while London City and Chelsea are separated by just 0.2 projected points. The relegation picture remains far less settled.

The title race

Arsenal have finished second in each of the past two seasons, but the gap to the champions has been narrowing. They ended the 2024–25 campaign 12 points behind an unbeaten Chelsea side; last season, they finished only four points behind Manchester City. That progress gives Arsenal a strong base from which to challenge again.

They have also strengthened that base during the summer. Georgia Stanway, Ona Batlle, Selina Cerci and Géraldine Reuteler bring quality in several areas of the pitch, adding greater control, creativity and depth to an already balanced squad. Our model consequently makes Arsenal the clear favourites, giving them a 74.7% chance of winning the title.

Manchester City cannot be discounted. They are the defending champions and retain one of the strongest squads in the league. Their summer business, however, has not improved their position as decisively as Arsenal’s. The loss of Kerolin Nicoli—who contributed nine goals and five assists in the league last season—is particularly significant. City remain the only serious challenger at 19.6%, but the model believes Arsenal begin the season in the stronger position.

The race for the top three

Arsenal and Manchester City are likely to take two of the top-three places, leaving London City and Chelsea in a remarkably close contest for the likely remaining spot. London City finish in the top three in 45.5% of our simulations, only narrowly ahead of Chelsea at 44.9%.

London City have transformed their squad this summer. Alexia Putellas and Kadidiatou Diani give them greater quality in attack, while María León and Mary Earps strengthen the team defensively. Nicole Anyomi and Rosa Kafaji add further first-team options.

Chelsea still have plenty of quality, and Giulia Dragoni is an exciting addition. But the departures of Millie Bright, Guro Reiten, Sam Kerr, Johanna Rytting Kaneryd and Niamh Charles leave significant gaps in experience and leadership. That uncertainty is why the model finds so little between Chelsea and London City.

Arsenal and City are strongly placed. London City and Chelsea are separated by only 0.6 percentage points, while United and Brighton lead the outside chase.

Looking beyond the headline probabilities shows two distinct groups among the leading four. Arsenal and Manchester City dominate the first two positions, although Arsenal are much more likely to finish first. Behind them, London City and Chelsea have almost identical finishing profiles, with both most commonly finishing third or fourth.

Arsenal and Manchester City are concentrated around first and second. London City and Chelsea share almost identical distributions centred on third and fourth.

The fight to stay up

The three promoted clubs begin the season at the centre of the relegation fight, with Birmingham facing the greatest danger. They finish bottom in 39.3% of our simulations and occupy the play-off place in a further 24.6%. That gives them a 63.9% chance of ending the season in the bottom two.

Charlton and Crystal Palace are much harder to separate. Charlton have a 24.0% chance of automatic relegation, compared with 22.6% for Palace, and their chances of entering the play-off are almost identical. Everton are the next most exposed club, but the model places a considerable gap between them and the three promoted sides.

None of those teams are doomed before a ball is kicked. Birmingham have added players with top-flight experience, while Charlton and Palace have also strengthened during the summer. The challenge for all three will be adapting quickly enough to the higher level.

Birmingham face the greatest danger, while Charlton and Crystal Palace are almost inseparable. Everton are the most exposed of the established WSL clubs.

How does the model work?

Our projections begin with each club’s attacking and defensive strength from the prior season. Promoted clubs are treated separately because performances in the WSL2 cannot be compared directly with performances against WSL opposition.

We then adjusted each team’s starting strength to account for material summer arrivals and departures.

For every fixture, the model estimates the goals each team might score, while accounting for home advantage. It then generates a possible result and repeats the complete 182-match season 10,000 times.

The percentages in this article represent how frequently each league outcome occurred across those simulated seasons.

All prediction data is based on WSLAnalytics simulations run on 25 August 2026. Transfers and other material model inputs were checked through the same cutoff.

This is the final instalment of our three-part retrospective on the 2025 summer transfer window. Across the series, we have returned to the judgments we made before the season and tested them against what actually followed.

In Part 1, we revisited Arsenal, Brighton, Aston Villa and Leicester City. Part 2 examined Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United. In this final part, the focus shifts to Everton, Liverpool, London City Lionesses and Manchester City.

The same questions remain: did the arrivals strengthen the first team, replace what departed and address the club’s most important needs?

The results reinforce the distinction at the heart of this series. Useful recruitment does not automatically produce a better season, while a strong retained core, a new coach or a different competitive environment can transform a team beyond the contribution of its summer arrivals. Equally, an ambitious window can give a promoted club the quality to compete immediately.

Part 3 at a glance

Everton — useful recruitment, unchanged season

• Our original verdict: Weakened in the short term

• Retrospective grade: Partly confirmed

• Window score: 3.8/5

Our argument at the time was that Everton had lost considerable WSL experience and leadership without replacing it with enough proven league production. Yuka Momiki represented the clearest immediate contributor, while the wider group carried significant adaptation risk. We felt the squad looked weaker in the short term, even if several arrivals possessed longer-term potential.

One season later, the recruitment worked better than the team did.

Everton finished eighth again, although they collected one fewer point and conceded five more goals. Brian Sørensen was also let go in February after three wins from 14 league matches. Overall, the campaign did not deliver the progress expected after the move to Goodison Park and an ambitious summer.

The arrivals, however, were not passengers. Martina Fernández and Ruby Mace became the central defensive pairing. Ornella Vignola started 21 matches and scored four goals, including a hat-trick on her WSL debut at Anfield, while Momiki contributed three goals and one assist. Altogether, the nine arrivals produced 11,249 minutes, 128 starts, 11 goals and nine assists.

Everton’s new core took responsibility—but did not raise the level

Our original verdict treated adaptation risk as the primary problem. In reality, several overseas arrivals adapted quickly enough to become regulars. But Everton had already removed much of the previous first-choice group, so those players had to assume responsibility immediately. Regular selection most likely reflected necessity rather than successful adaptation.

The final test was whether the new core could match or improve upon the players it replaced. It did not, because Everton collected one fewer point, scored only one additional goal and conceded five more. The attack still lacked a dominant scorer, while the managerial change further disrupted the campaign.

Our final verdict:

Everton’s summer arrivals formed a credible new first-team core, but they did not raise the team’s collective level. The short-term warning was justified, even if the individual players performed better than we expected.

Liverpool — one successful striker, weaker team

• Our original verdict: Weakened

• Retrospective grade: Confirmed

• Window score: 3.0/5

Our argument at the time was that Liverpool had lost too much proven attacking quality and senior leadership. Olivia Smith, Taylor Hinds and several established players had departed. The squad looked younger, but also less authoritative especially in the areas that decide matches.

At the time of publication, Beata Olsson, Risa Shimizu, Alejandra Bernabé and Emilia Szymczak had not yet joined, so they were not included in our original analysis. Because this retrospective assesses the completed window and its overall impact, all four are included in the evaluation.

One season later, Liverpool were weaker despite finding a successful striker.

Olsson was the clear success. She scored six goals in 16 appearances, supplied two assists and accounted for almost 29% of Liverpool’s league goals. However, she was the only summer arrival to score in the WSL. Altogether, the eight arrivals produced 5,653 minutes, 64 starts, six goals and four assists.

That was not enough to replace everything Liverpool had lost. They fell from seventh to 11th, collected eight fewer points and scored one fewer goal. The defence conceded three fewer, but the completed window did not restore the creativity, progression or leadership removed from the team.

Our final verdict:

Liverpool found a successful striker in Olsson, but the completed window did not replace enough of the creativity, progression and leadership that departed. Their fall from seventh to 11th confirmed our original warning.

London City Lionesses — ambitious recruitment, immediate impact

• Our original verdict: Strengthened decisively

• Retrospective grade: Confirmed decisively

• Window score: 4.6/5

Our argument at the time was that London City had produced the clearest improvement of the summer. The promoted club added proven WSL production, Champions League experience, international leadership and younger players with significant upside, while losing little top-flight output.

The completed window eventually included 17 senior additions, giving London City genuine first-team options across every line.

One season later, the ambition translated immediately.

London City won eight matches, collected 27 points and finished sixth in their first WSL campaign, above six established top-flight clubs. Their summer recruitment formed the spine of the side.

Elene Lete played every league minute, Jana Fernández started 21 matches and Elena Linari started 15. Grace Geyoro started 16 times, but her overall influence and return of one goal and no assists fell short of the expectations surrounding such a high-profile signing. Nikita Parris contributed seven goal involvements, while Freya Godfrey produced six goals and four assists. The eight principal contributors shown below combined for 10,412 minutes, 119 starts, 15 goals and nine assists.

The summer window built the platform

Not every high-profile arrival met expectations, but the class collectively gave London City enough quality and depth to compete immediately in the WSL.

London City were already sixth when the coaching change was made, with little jeopardy surrounding their position. The change therefore cannot be credited with producing the top-half finish, and the subsequent results did not establish a clear immediate upgrade. It appeared to be a decision made with the club’s next stage in mind. The core of the team that finished sixth had already been assembled during the summer.

Our final verdict:

London City’s summer recruitment worked: it built the core of a promoted side that finished sixth in its first WSL season. Not every high-profile arrival met expectations, but the defensive foundation, depth and attacking output confirmed our verdict that the squad had been strengthened decisively.

Manchester City — limited transfer impact, title-winning season

• Our original verdict: Weakened

• Retrospective grade: Overturned decisively

• Window score: 4.0/5

Our argument at the time was that Manchester City had exchanged proven, prime-age WSL performers for younger players with less certain immediate output. Chloe Kelly, Jill Roord and Laia Aleixandri had departed, leaving the squad with significant experience and production to replace.

At the time of publication, the deadline-day exchange involving Jess Park and Grace Clinton had not yet happened, so it was not included in our original analysis. Because this retrospective assesses the completed window, both moves are considered here.

One season later, the team improved far more than the transfer class did.

City rose from fourth to first, collected 12 more points, scored 13 more goals and conceded nine fewer. They finished on 55 points, ended Chelsea’s six-year title run and equalled their highest WSL points total.

Jade Rose was the standout arrival, starting 19 matches and scoring once in a title-winning defence. Iman Beney contributed two goals and two assists from a rotation role, but the remaining four additions made only four league starts between them. Altogether, the six arrivals produced 2,868 minutes, 28 starts, four goals and four assists.

City’s improvement extended beyond the transfer window

Our original framework placed too much weight on the exchange of summer arrivals and departures without giving enough consideration to the quality that remained.

Andrée Jeglertz changed the team’s style and restored consistency. City also had no Champions League schedule, while Bunny Shaw and the retained core supplied most of the title-winning output. The team became less possession-heavy, more direct and considerably more efficient.

The title therefore overturns our judgment that City had become weaker, but it does not mean every concern about the window disappeared. The Park–Clinton exchange delivered far more immediate league output to Manchester United, while most of City’s other additions played limited roles.

Our final verdict:

Manchester City became champions, decisively overturning our verdict that the squad had weakened. Rose was an excellent first-team addition, but the largest improvement came from the coach, the retained core and a lighter schedule rather than widespread impact from the summer arrivals.

The overall verdict on Part 3

Two original judgments survived, one was only partly right and one was overturned.

Liverpool lost the attacking authority we feared they would miss. London City’s ambition translated into an immediate top-half finish. Everton stood still, but their arrivals were considerably better than our original warning implied. Manchester City became champions after we called their window weaker.

The lesson is not that transfer analysis is futile. It is that a window must be judged alongside the quality already in the squad, the role available to each signing, the coach and the schedule the team will face.

Our next transfer analysis will still make direct judgments. But it will distinguish more clearly between a club’s recruitment, the total strength of its squad and the conditions in which that squad must perform.

Part 2 at a glance

Chelsea — good recruitment, weaker season

• Our original verdict: Re-tooling

• Retrospective grade: Mostly confirmed

Our argument at the time was that Chelsea had lost experience and some depth without requiring a complete rebuild. Ellie Carpenter represented the major first-team addition and appeared capable of replacing Ashley Lawrence on the right. Livia Peng, Mara Alber and Rebecca Spencer added different forms of depth, although the overall squad looked slightly slimmer than usual.

At the time of publication, Alyssa Thompson’s deadline-day signing had not yet been announced, so she was not factored into our original analysis or verdict. However, because this retrospective assesses the completed window and its overall impact, Thompson is included in the evaluation.

One season later, the recruitment worked better than the team did.

Carpenter became a first-choice player as expected, while deadline-day signing Alyssa Thompson transformed the completed window. Thompson scored seven league goals, supplied three assists and finished with more WSL goal involvements than any other Chelsea player. Peng provided usable goalkeeping cover, but Alber and Spencer did not play in the league. Altogether, the five arrivals produced 3,412 minutes, 38 starts, nine goals and five assists.

Chelsea re-tooled successfully—but lost their title

The new arrivals were not the main reason Chelsea’s results worsened. Carpenter and Thompson were among the team’s strongest performers, while Carpenter effectively replaced Lawrence at right-back. However, their contributions were not enough to prevent a broader decline, as Chelsea finished with 11 fewer points, scored 12 fewer goals and conceded seven more than in the previous season. Their run of six consecutive WSL titles ended as they dropped from first to third.

Our final verdict:

Chelsea’s summer recruitment worked: Carpenter and Thompson strengthened the first team, but those successful additions did not preserve the club’s title-winning standard.

Manchester United — the signings delivered, but the squad still fell short

• Retrospective grade: Mostly confirmed

Our verdict at the time was based on the experience and quality of Julia Zigiotti Olme and Fridolina Rolfö. Both had played at Champions League level and appeared capable of raising United’s ceiling immediately. The primary concern was whether such a small incoming group provided enough depth for a team entering the Champions League proper for the first time.

At the time we published our original analysis, the deadline-day swap involving Jess Park and Grace Clinton had not yet taken place, so neither move informed our verdict. Because this retrospective assesses the completed window, Park’s arrival and Clinton’s departure are included below.

One season later, all three summer arrivals proved to be meaningful contributors.

Zigiotti Olme established herself in midfield, while Rolfö supplied experience, versatility and four league goal involvements. The decisive arrival was Park. She scored six goals, provided five assists, earned a Player of the Season nomination and was selected in the WSL Team of the Year. Together, the three arrivals produced 4,076 minutes, 47 starts, 11 goals and eight assists.

United strengthened, but Champions League football stretched the squad

Park immediately replaced Clinton’s attacking output, while Zigiotti Olme and Rolfö adapted quickly. Collectively, however, United fell from third to fourth, scored three fewer goals and conceded six more. The arrivals strengthened the team, but the wider squad was not equipped for the additional demands of Champions League football. United performed impressively in Europe, reaching the quarter-finals in their first appearance in the competition proper, while also reaching the League Cup final. The demands of the expanded schedule eventually told: they ended the campaign with only one victory from their final ten matches in all competitions.

Our final verdict:

Manchester United recruited three strong first-team players, but the small summer class did not provide enough depth to maintain their previous league position alongside European competition.

Tottenham Hotspur — our original verdict was decisively wrong

• Our original verdict: Weakened

• Retrospective grade: Overturned decisively

• Window score: 4.5/5

Our assessment at the time was that Tottenham had sacrificed experience for very limited proven potential. Toko Koga was the only arrival recorded at publication, while Rosella Ayane and Rebecca Spencer had departed. With no previous WSL minutes, Koga was treated as a talented but uncertain development signing. We concluded that Spurs would be weaker unless she adapted quickly or further business followed.

At the time of publication, Cathinka Tandberg’s deadline-day signing had not yet been announced, so she was not included in our original analysis or verdict. However, that omission alone does not explain why we were wrong. Under our grading criteria, Tandberg would probably have been placed in the same category as Koga: a talented player without WSL experience whose immediate impact remained uncertain. Even if her signing had been announced, our verdict would likely have remained unchanged.

One season later, Koga and Tandberg decisively overturned both our verdict and the assumptions behind it.

Koga became a first-choice centre-back, started 19 league matches and was selected in the WSL Team of the Season. She also won Tottenham’s Adults Supporters’ Player of the Season award. Tandberg provided the attacking reinforcement that had appeared to be missing, scoring six goals and supplying two assists. Together, the two arrivals produced 2,864 minutes, 32 starts, eight goals and three assists.

Tottenham strengthened at both ends

Spurs rose six places, added 16 points and improved their goal difference by 15. They set a new club WSL record with 36 points and finished fifth, equalling their best finish in the competition. Koga provided defensive stability, while Tandberg gave the attack a reliable central threat. Martin Ho’s appointment and five January arrivals were also important, so the improvement cannot be credited solely to the two summer signings. Even so, both were unambiguous first-season successes.

Our final verdict:

Tottenham’s summer recruitment was outstanding: Koga became one of the league’s best defenders and Tandberg supplied the goals the publication-time squad appeared to lack.

West Ham United — the warning held, but the reasoning was too blunt

• Our original verdict: Weakened

• Retrospective grade: Mostly confirmed

• Window score: 2.8/5

Our argument at the time was that West Ham had lost too much WSL experience and replaced it with younger, less proven players. The departures of Kirsty Smith, Dagný Brynjarsdóttir, Emma Harries and Shannon Cooke reduced the squad’s senior depth, while the incoming group appeared unlikely to replace that experience immediately.

One season later, West Ham were weaker—but the arrivals were more useful than we anticipated.

Ffion Morgan and Yu Endo became regular contributors, while Leila Wandeler earned a rotational role and was named Young Hammer of the Year. Sarah Brasero remained a development player, and Anna Csiki’s deadline-day loan ended in January. The five summer arrivals produced 2,922 minutes and 31 starts, but only two goals and three assists. They replaced much of the departed players’ playing time, but not their leadership or influence.

West Ham’s attacking decline confirmed the short-term risk

West Ham fell only one place, but the decline behind that movement was severe. They collected four fewer points, conceded four more goals and scored 16 fewer. Rehanne Skinner departed after the team managed one victory and five points from its opening 11 matches. Rita Guarino and five January additions helped West Ham recover, but the need for such substantial mid-season intervention supported our original warning that the summer squad was too vulnerable.

Our final verdict:

West Ham’s window produced two useful regulars and some longer-term potential, but it did not add enough immediate quality to prevent a significant first-team decline.

The overall verdict on Part 2

Three of our four original judgments broadly survived.

Chelsea re-tooled successfully, Manchester United added quality without solving their depth problem, and West Ham were weakened in the short term. Tottenham were the clear exception.

Once again, the review exposed the limits of our original framework. Previous WSL minutes alone could not capture experience gained in other strong leagues, while first-choice signings, rotation players, academy recruits and goalkeepers required different expectations.

One season after the 2025 summer transfer window closed, it is time to revisit the judgments we made.

In August last year, we published a club-by-club assessment of every Women’s Super League transfer window. The aim was never to rank signings or hand out grades in isolation. We assessed whether each club had genuinely strengthened, weakened or entered the new season facing greater uncertainty.

The verdicts generated agreement, criticism and considerable debate, as they should have. What we did commit to was that once the season was over, we would return and test those conclusions against what actually happened. And that is what we are doing in this series.

OUR ORIGINAL FRAMEWORK

The original analysis was produced within clear data constraints. At the time, our framework relied on a relatively limited set of indicators: minutes played, squad value where available, goals and assists. The balance between the arrivals and departures then informed whether we judged a team to have strengthened or weakened.

We also counted only WSL minutes, which created an obvious limitation for players arriving from overseas. A high-quality international signing could therefore receive little or no numerical credit simply because she had not previously played in the league. Where we had sufficient knowledge of the competition, particularly leagues such as Liga F, we introduced qualitative adjustments, but those judgments could not be applied consistently across every market.

The assessments were analytical judgments made from the best evidence available to us at the time. The criticism helped expose where the first version of the framework was too narrow, where it undervalued performance outside the WSL and where simple production metrics could not fully capture a player’s quality, role or likely fit.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN THIS SERIES

This review is not an exercise in proving ourselves right or wrong. Forecasting is valuable only if it is tested against reality.

Some verdicts may have been right for the wrong reasons. Some individual signings may have exceeded expectations even if the overall window of the team disappointed. Injuries, tactical changes and squad development can all reshape a season in ways that no pre-season analysis can fully anticipate.

The objective is therefore twofold:

1. Was our original club-level verdict right?

2. What did the outcome teach us about improving the evaluation framework?

Reviewing every club in sufficient depth would make for an article that is difficult to read and even harder to do justice. As a result, we divided the retrospective into three parts, allowing each club's transfer window to be examined in the detail it deserves.

PART 1: ARSENAL, BRIGHTON, ASTON VILLA & LEICESTER CITY

We begin with four clubs whose transfer windows illustrate very different outcomes: one title challenger that strengthened as expected, one ambitious project that accepted significant short-term risk, one club navigating a transitional summer, and one whose squad regression proved even more damaging than anticipated.

Part 1 at a glance

Arsenal — strengthened, but still came second

• Our original verdict: Strengthened

• Retrospective grade: Confirmed

Our argument then was that Arsenal had exchanged fringe players for proven contributors. Olivia Smith, the first £1 million signing in women’s football, and Chloe Kelly, whose loan move from Manchester City had been made permanent, were expected to raise the attacking level. Taylor Hinds, who joined from Liverpool, added experienced full-back cover, while Anneke Borbe strengthened the goalkeeping group. The outgoing players, however talented, had contributed only a small fraction of Arsenal’s previous league minutes.

One season later, that verdict held.

The four arrivals produced 3,012 WSL minutes, 33 starts, 10 goals and seven assists. Smith established herself as a first-choice player. Kelly endured a stop-start, injury-disrupted season but delivered whenever available, scoring five goals in only 470 minutes. Hinds provided experienced full-back rotation, making six starts and 10 substitute appearances. Borbe, who was initially expected to simply strengthen Arsenal’s goalkeeping options, assumed a much greater role as Daphne van Domselaar struggled with injuries. She started eight league matches, kept six clean sheets and performed outstandingly when Arsenal needed her.

Arsenal did strengthen. But fell short again.

A transfer window can improve a squad without solving every reason a team falls short. Arsenal collected three more points, lost only once and conceded 12 fewer goals than in the previous season. They became the league’s strongest defensive side, conceding the fewest goals, while also finishing as its second-highest scorers behind Manchester City. Ultimately, they still finished four points behind City.

Our final verdict:

Arsenal’s 2025–26 summer recruitment worked: it raised the level of the first team and strengthened the rotation, but the deeper squad still did not convert enough league matches into victories.

Brighton — the defence worked, but the attacking replacement did not

• Our original verdict: A gamble — weakened short-term, with genuine long-term upside

• Retrospective grade: Mostly confirmed

• Window score: 3.5/5

Our argument at the time was that Brighton had replaced more than 8,900 minutes of established WSL experience with a younger group composed largely of overseas arrivals and two Arsenal loanees. Nikita Parris, Poppy Pattinson and Guro Bergsvand were among the big-name departures, while much of the incoming talent had no previous WSL experience. The squad offered greater long-term value, but its immediate competitiveness depended on the new players adapting quickly and the attack replacing Parris’s seven goals and five assists. Given the demands of the WSL, we were not convinced that the young overseas arrivals could adjust immediately or shoulder such a significant responsibility.

One year later, the direction of that verdict held, but not for the reason we expected.

Brighton’s eight arrivals produced 6,701 WSL minutes, 75 starts, eight goals and five assists. Chiamaka Nnadozie and Moeka Minami became immediate first-choice players and were central to a defence that conceded 13 fewer goals. Manuela Vanegas provided another regular defensive option, while Rosa Kafaji contributed two goals and three assists. As we had anticipated, however, the loss of Parris was clearly reflected in the attacking returns: the eight new arrivals combined for only one more goal than Parris had scored single-handedly the previous season. Michelle Agyemang began promisingly before suffering a season-ending ACL injury, an unfortunate setback beyond Brighton’s control, and the story might have been different had she remained fit. Carla Camacho, Maëlys Mpomé and Fuka Tsunoda, meanwhile, remained developing players rather than dependable replacements for Parris. Brighton’s recruitment therefore produced genuine value, but the goals lost during the summer were never fully recovered.

Brighton improved defensively, but lost their attacking edge

Brighton fell from fifth to seventh and collected two fewer points, but this was not a straightforward decline. Their defensive record improved substantially: goals conceded fell from 41 to 28, and their goal difference improved from minus six to minus one. The problem was at the opposite end. Brighton scored eight fewer goals, and the stronger defence could not compensate for the loss of attacking production. They won only one fewer league match and reached the Women’s FA Cup final, but the absence of a reliable replacement for Parris ultimately limited what the rebuild could achieve.

Our final verdict:

Brighton’s summer recruitment produced a younger squad and a significantly better defence, but it did not replace the attacking reliability that departed with Parris. The gamble worked to an extent, with several of the new arrivals adapting far better than we had originally anticipated.

Aston Villa — the transition was real, but so were the successes

• Our original verdict: Transitioning

• Retrospective grade: Confirmed, with some qualification

• Window score: 3.3/5

Our argument at the time was that Villa had exchanged established WSL experience and leadership for a younger group of players assembled mainly from Germany, France, Spain, Japan and the Championship. Jordan Nobbs, Danielle Turner, Maz Pacheco and Rachel Corsie were among the significant departures. The squad in our view had long-term potential, but we were concerned that its immediate competitiveness could decline while the new arrivals assumed responsibilities left by the veteran departures. Our original analysis also omitted Maya Hijikata, despite Villa announcing her three days before publication.

One season later, the transition was real, but several of the new players succeeded immediately.

Villa’s six arrivals produced 6,087 WSL minutes, 69 starts, two goals and eight assists. Lynn Wilms was the outstanding signing, starting 17 matches and finishing joint-top of the league’s assist chart with seven. Lucia Kendall moved directly from the Championship into Villa’s starting midfield and earned a Rising Star nomination, while Océane Deslandes made 16 starts in defence. Hijikata also started ten matches, and Ellie Roebuck provided competition rather than becoming the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper. Jill Baijings, whose loan spell from Bayern Munich the previous season had been converted into a permanent move, ruptured her ACL after starting the opening three league matches. Villa therefore replaced the departing minutes, but the new group produced limited attacking output and could not immediately restore the stability and leadership that had been lost.

Villa found building blocks, but the team went backwards

Villa fell from sixth to ninth, collected five fewer points, scored four fewer goals and conceded four more. Wilms, Kendall and Deslandes established themselves, but their individual success did not produce a balanced team. The six arrivals scored only two league goals, both through Wilms, while Kirsty Hanson supplied 12 of Villa’s 28 goals by herself. Baijings’ injury removed an important source of midfield continuity, the goalkeeper position remained shared and the defence continued to concede heavily. Villa finished with several promising long-term pieces, but the first season of the rebuild left them weaker at both ends of the pitch.

Our final verdict:

Villa’s transition produced genuine individual successes, particularly Wilms and Kendall, but the younger squad did not replace the balance, leadership or attacking support that departed. Our warning about a short-term decline was correct, even though several arrivals adapted better than the original analysis anticipated.

Leicester City — not only weakened, but relegated

• Our original verdict: Weakened

• Retrospective grade: Confirmed decisively

• Window score: 2.0/5

Our argument at the time was that Leicester had lost too much established WSL quality, creativity and depth without adequately replacing it. Heather Payne added experience, but she could not offset the wider departures alone. The original assessment was incomplete, though. After publication, Leicester signed Emily van Egmond, Olivia McLoughlin, Rosella Ayane and Cecily Wellesley-Smith, while Ruby Mace subsequently left in a club-record sale. Those late changes improved the midfield, but they did not correct the overall imbalance of the squad.

One year later, our warning was confirmed more decisively than expected.

Leicester’s seven arrivals produced 3,987 WSL minutes, 42 starts, one goal and one assist. McLoughlin and Van Egmond were the two meaningful successes, accounting for 70% of the group’s minutes and 32 of its 42 starts. They became credible first-choice midfielders, with Van Egmond supplying the arrivals’ only goal and assist. The remaining additions offered little impact. Payne made only three starts, while Ayane, Keane and Wellesley-Smith barely featured. Celeste Boureille had begun to establish herself before suffering an unforeseeable ACL injury in December.

Leicester lost every margin they previously gained

Leicester fell from a club-record 20 points to nine, scored ten fewer goals and conceded 15 more. Their goal difference deteriorated by 25, while the summer arrivals contributed only two direct goal involvements. A managerial change before the season added further instability, but the underlying squad problems were unmistakable. Leicester lost their final 11 league matches, scoring four goals and conceding 32 during that sequence, before losing to Charlton on penalties in the relegation play-off. The play-off delivered the final blow; the shortage of attacking threat, defensive resilience and first-team depth had developed across the entire season.

Our final verdict:

Leicester’s late midfield additions provided useful minutes, but the completed window did not replace the creativity, attacking output or established depth that departed. Our “weakened” verdict was decisively confirmed: the squad lost too much quality and entered the season without enough margin to survive.

The overall verdict on Part 1

We were right on the broad direction of all four clubs.

Arsenal strengthened. Brighton accepted a genuine short-term gamble. Aston Villa entered a transition that reduced their immediate competitiveness. Leicester were weakened, and the consequences were even more severe than we anticipated.

But this review also shows where our original framework was too blunt.

It overvalued previous WSL minutes, undervalued experience from other elite leagues and did not distinguish clearly enough between first-choice signings, rotation options, development players and goalkeepers.

Our next transfer analysis will still make direct judgments. But this time we will make them using more and better evidence.

That is the purpose of returning to the original work: not to rewrite what we said, but to understand why each verdict succeeded, failed or reached the right conclusion.

The 2026–27 fixture release was the first clear indication of how WSL Football responded to last season’s attendance and broadcast experiment.

The response is visible immediately. Sunday still remains the league’s dominant day, but that awkward noon kickoff no longer controls the calendar. The new schedule is now built around 14:00. The use of larger stadiums is also becoming standard. Six clubs have all 13 home fixtures at a main stadium, another six use a hybrid model and 92 of the league’s 182 matches are currently assigned to a main or larger ground.

That is a meaningful change in strategy. It gives clubs better conditions in which to attract supporters. It does not guarantee that they will.

The clearest change is the clock

Last season, the WSL deliberately concentrated matches around Sunday midday. The stated objective was to create a recognisable appointment-to-view and give every matchweek a consistent shape.

The outcome of that was mixed. Our early-season attendance study found that 32 of the first 52 league matches—61.5%—started at 12:00. Another five began at either 11:55 or 12:15. In total, 37 of the 52 fixtures were scheduled within 15 minutes of noon.

It is true that kickoff time was not the only cause of weak crowds. Things like club demand, fixture quality and venue mattered even more. But timing amplified those conditions. A major match could overcome an inconvenient time slot; a less prominent one often could not.

The new calendar changes that centre of gravity. Of the 175 fixtures with a published time, 109—62.3%—are scheduled for 14:00. Only seven are currently at 12:00, with none at 11:55 or 12:15. Sunday still accounts for 136 of the 175 timed fixtures, so the league has not abandoned its principal matchday. It simply moved it later.

For supporters, 14:00 is a more usable time. It allows more time for travel, reduces the pressure on families and creates a larger pre-match hospitality window. Later broadcast selections could still alter the schedule, but the league has corrected the most obvious weakness in last season’s calendar.

The comparison uses the first 52 matches from our 2025–26 timing study and all 175 currently timed fixtures in the 2026–27 release.

Big-stadium football is becoming the operating model

The second change is even larger.

Arsenal, Aston Villa, Birmingham City, Charlton Athletic, Chelsea and Everton currently have all 13 home league fixtures at a main stadium. Brighton, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Crystal Palace and Manchester United use a hybrid model that places selected matches at a larger venue.

Across the league, 92 of 182 fixtures—50.5%—are assigned to a main or larger stadium. The big grounds are no longer being treated only as a showcase. They are becoming the operating model.

Arsenal demonstrated the opportunity last season. Their 11 Emirates league matches generated 371,886 spectators, 41.2% of the league’s total attendance. Everton’s use of Goodison Park created another permanent step up. Chelsea are taking the same bet by scheduling all 13 home matches at Stamford Bridge.

It is important to note that capacity is not demand. A club that opens a major stadium every week must create repeat behaviour through season tickets, local partnerships, group sales, transport planning and a recognisable matchday identity. The test is no longer whether a club can stage one large event. It is whether it can sustain a large home crowd across an entire season.

“Main or larger stadium” is a venue classification, not an attendance forecast. London City Lionesses and West Ham remain at their established home grounds in the current release.

One million spectators is now a weak benchmark

Another important feature of the expanded league is that it changes our headline benchmark. The WSL drew 902,981 spectators across 132 matches in 2025–26, an average of 6,841 and a median of 3,236. With 182 matches this season, one million spectators would require an average of only 5,495—19.7% below last year’s figure. If the previous average were simply maintained, total attendance would reach about 1.245 million.

One million would be marketable. It would not, on its own, prove growth. Average attendance, median attendance, stadium utilisation and improvement beyond Arsenal will tell us far more.

The “if average holds” figure is a mechanical scenario, not a forecast.

The broadcast structure is clearer. The reach question remains.

The new fixture plan improves when matches are played, but it does not yet expand who can watch them without a Sky subscription. That is the unresolved part of the WSL’s audience strategy.

The opening four matchweeks contain 28 fixtures. Sky will show 25 of them, while three will appear on the BBC. Within Sky’s allocation, 14 matches are on Sky Sports+ and 11 receive a dedicated Sky Sports slot. This gives existing supporters comprehensive access and creates clearer television windows. However, it leaves free-to-air exposure largely unchanged.

This is important because last season demonstrated the difference between availability and discovery. Domestic coverage increased by 76% to 697 hours, yet measured reach fell by 10% to 11.06 million and total viewing hours slipped by 1%. Also all of the ten largest live audiences came on the BBC last season. So while Sky showed more football, the BBC delivered the season’s largest individual audiences.

This is not an argument against Sky’s position as the WSL’s principal broadcast partner. Sky provides the volume, production and consistent destination required by the five-year agreement. The issue is how the smaller BBC allocation is used. Those matches are the league’s strongest opportunity to reach people who do not already follow the competition.

Most of the season remains unassigned, so this is not a final verdict. The remaining 154 fixtures could still produce a stronger BBC schedule. For now, the WSL has improved the structure of its coverage; whether it has improved its reach remains unanswered.

The chart covers Matchweeks 1–4 only. It does not assume the later unassigned fixtures will remain in their current slots.

What success now looks like

The WSL has improved the conditions around attendance in three clear ways: the dominant kickoff has moved from noon to 14:00, clubs have committed far more inventory to major stadiums and premium matches can be separated from the central Sunday block.

The risks are equally clear. Larger grounds can expose empty seats. Growth can remain too dependent on Arsenal. A crowded 14:00 block can reproduce the same fragmentation as noon. And a schedule concentrated on paid platforms can serve existing supporters without widening the audience.

The league should therefore be judged against four tests: whether average and median attendance rise; whether growth extends across more clubs; whether larger stadiums achieve credible utilisation; and whether later broadcast selections preserve the better timing in the released calendar.

Verdict: a better plan, not problem solved

The WSL has corrected two clear weaknesses from last season. It has moved the centre of the calendar from noon to 14:00 and committed half of its fixtures to main or larger stadiums. That gives supporters more convenient kickoff times and gives clubs substantially more room to grow their crowds.

But better conditions do not automatically create greater demand. Larger stadiums still have to be filled, attendance growth must extend beyond Arsenal and the league must reach people who are not already committed supporters. The opening broadcast allocation does not yet show a significant expansion of that reach.

So, has the WSL fixed its audience problem? No—not yet. It has removed some of the obstacles that made growth more difficult.

The 2026–27 fixture list provides a much stronger platform for attendance growth than last season’s calendar. Whether that platform produces a genuinely larger audience will now depend on club-level ticketing, promotion, stadium utilisation and the quality of the remaining broadcast selections.

Arsenal did not need another headline name. They needed a midfielder who raises the level of the team, carries responsibility across a full season and gives Renée Slegers better options when the schedule tightens. Georgia Stanway does all three.

A signing built for a title race

On 3 July 2026, Arsenal announced the signing of 27-year-old Georgia Stanway on a free transfer following the expiry of her Bayern Munich contract. She will wear number 4 and returns to the Women’s Super League four years after leaving Manchester City, not as the same utility midfielder, but as a four-time Bundesliga champion shaped by central responsibility at Bayern.

This is not your typical speculative signing or a bet on potential. Arsenal have recruited a player in her prime with extensive WSL experience, 128 Bayern appearances, four consecutive Bundesliga titles and two European Championships with England. She has played in title races, major knockout matches and demanding international tournaments. She knows the league and arrives with a broader midfield education from Germany.

The timing is also key. Arsenal finished four points behind Manchester City last season. They had an elite squad that was good enough to challenge for the title, but they spent too much of the season recovering from an uneven start and too much of the run-in carrying a heavier schedule than their main rival.

Stanway does not solve every problem behind that four-point gap. She does, however, address one of the biggest: Arsenal needed more high-level midfield capacity without sacrificing intensity, experience or attacking contribution. They did not have it last season. When either Mariona Caldentey or Kim Little was removed from central midfield, Arsenal’s alternatives could not reproduce the same control. That drop-off was not title-winning depth.

Arsenal lost ground before the run-in

Arsenal finished second on 51 points with a +39 goal difference. Manchester City won the title with 55. The final table made the race look close, but in reality Arsenal spent much of the season chasing.

They won their opening two league matches and then took only two points from the next three. By Christmas, after 11 games, they were eight points behind. Arsenal recovered strongly, but a title-winning side cannot allow that deficit to develop in the first place, or spend half a season repairing avoidable damage.

The schedule made that task even harder. Arsenal competed across five competitions. Before their final league match, their players had averaged 481 more minutes than Manchester City’s, and Arsenal had played ten more games. During the final stretch, Arsenal played six times in 18 days while City played twice.

That workload exposed the difference between having talented midfielders and having enough midfield power for an entire campaign. Arsenal needed to rotate without losing control. They needed experienced players ready to enter major matches without the structure changing around them. They needed more than one route through midfield.

Stanway gives them that.

Arsenal recovered from an eight-point Christmas deficit to finish four points behind Manchester City, while carrying six matches across all competitions in 18 days during the run-in.

Stanway returns at the peak of her career

Stanway left Manchester City in 2022 after seven seasons, 186 appearances and 67 goals. She moved to Bayern, won the Bundesliga in each of her four seasons and added two German Cups and two German Super Cups. Her Bayern spell produced 128 appearances and 32 goals.

The medals matter, but the development behind them matters more. At Manchester City, Stanway’s versatility sometimes pulled her between central, advanced and wider roles. Bayern made her a central figure. She became responsible for progressing possession, competing through midfield, arriving around the penalty area and setting the tempo of the team.

The passing data makes that development explicit. Since the start of 2022–23, Stanway completed 2,919 passes in the opposition half in the Bundesliga, 754 more than any other player, and 1,495 passes that ended in the final third, 418 clear of the next player. In the Champions League over the same period, she ranked fifth for completed passes in the opposition half and sixth for passes into the final third.

Those are not the numbers of a midfielder who only arrives to finish attacks. They show a player who can start from the base, take responsibility for circulation and move Arsenal into advanced territory.

Her 2025–26 season shows the level at which she returns. Stanway played 1,841 Bundesliga minutes across 25 appearances, her second-highest league total at Bayern and just 22 minutes below her 2023–24 peak. Across the Bundesliga, Champions League, German Cup and Supercup, she played 2,997 minutes.

Stanway also delivered in the final third. She scored seven Bundesliga goals and registered 11 assists in 2025–26, the second-highest assist total in the league according to the DFB. That gave her 18 direct goal contributions. That is an elite attacking production from central midfield.

This is the player Arsenal have signed, not simply the familiar England international who used to play for Manchester City, but a midfielder returning from four years of increased responsibility.

Stanway returned from the 2024–25 knee injury to play 1,841 Bundesliga minutes, just 22 short of her Bayern high.

Stanway can control Arsenal’s midfield from the base or as an eight

Stanway is not a passive holding midfielder. Bayern used her from the base, but her value there was progressive: she received early, played through pressure and repeatedly moved possession into the opposition half and final third.

This gives Arsenal two credible starting points. She can operate as the deeper controller in a midfield with enough mobility and defensive discipline around her, or as the aggressive eight beside a more positionally fixed holder. In both roles, the purpose is the same: move the team forward without surrendering control when possession changes.

Her presence also changes the demands placed on Arsenal’s other midfielders, particularly Mariona Caldentey. Caldentey no longer has to solve every progression problem from central areas. Arsenal can push her higher without stripping the midfield of experience, or use her deeper without making that the team’s only route through pressure.

Géraldine Reuteler’s arrival widens those choices further. She has played at the base, as an eight, in advanced midfield and across the front line. Arsenal have added two players capable of changing both the shape and distribution of responsibility in the central third. Slegers can now select combinations to suit the opponent instead of allowing fatigue or injury to dictate them.

In a nutshell, there are three practical uses for Stanway:

1. Use her as a progressive base midfielder who takes responsibility for moving Arsenal up the pitch.

2. Start her as the two-way eight in a pairing with a more positionally conservative midfielder.

3. Rotate her across central roles during congested periods without lowering the level of the midfield.

Those are not three competing identities. They are the point of the signing. Arsenal have bought one player who strengthens the first-choice team and the rotation behind it.

Stanway can progress Arsenal from the base, play as a two-way eight or preserve the midfield’s level through rotation. These are WSLAnalytics tactical pathways, not confirmed Arsenal formations.

Stanway gives Arsenal more control, not just more output

Seven goals and eleven assists make an easy headline, but Stanway’s larger value is structural.

Arsenal’s challenge is not simply to add more final actions. It is to maintain the same authority across different game states and different weeks of the season. A title-winning midfield has to control open matches, break down compact opponents, survive transitions and keep functioning when the calendar removes recovery time.

Stanway improves that structure because she can contribute without the team being built around one narrow skill. She can receive deeper, play through pressure, attack space and compete when the ball turns over. She gives Arsenal another midfielder who expects responsibility rather than protection.

That should make rotation more credible. Resting one senior midfielder no longer has to mean changing the personality of the team. Moving Mariona forward no longer has to remove proven progression from central areas. Chasing a goal no longer has to mean replacing midfield control with another attacker.

This is how a free transfer can alter a title race without being framed as a saviour. Stanway expands the number of strong decisions available to Slegers.

What can previous WSL transfers tell us?

Keira Walsh’s move from Barcelona to Chelsea is the obvious recent comparison: an established England midfielder returning from an elite continental club to join an immediate WSL contender. The roles are different though, Walsh is a distribution-led holding midfielder, while Stanway offers more running and final-third involvement, but both transfers reduce adaptation risk and add proven authority to the centre of the pitch.

Mariona’s move from Barcelona to Arsenal offers the more useful internal lesson. Arsenal did not preserve one fixed role for her; they used her intelligence in different areas according to the team’s needs. Stanway gives Slegers the same kind of flexibility from a different midfield profile.

The lesson is not that either player predicts Stanway’s numbers. It is that elite experience becomes most valuable when the manager uses it to solve several problems, not just to fill one position on a team sheet.

What Arsenal must get right

The transfer is excellent. The implementation still matters.

First, Arsenal must define the protection around Stanway. Playing from the base does not make her a one-player defensive platform, and using her as an eight creates space behind her advances. Pairing her with another aggressive midfielder without clear positional discipline would create the same transition problems the signing is supposed to reduce.

Second, Slegers must use the depth. Stanway’s arrival loses part of its value if Arsenal simply replace one overworked midfielder with another. Her minutes should allow the team to rotate earlier, not merely survive later.

Third, Arsenal must define the hierarchy without limiting the flexibility. Stanway is good enough to start major matches, but the midfield should not depend on one fixed partnership. The advantage lies in having several strong combinations for different opponents and different stages of the season.

Finally, the team must start faster. Yes, faster. Stanway strengthens the conditions around the title challenge, but Arsenal still have to turn early control into wins. Four points separated them from Manchester City; the decisive damage was the eight-point deficit they had already allowed to develop by Christmas.

Verdict

Georgia Stanway is exactly the type of midfielder Arsenal needed.

She arrives on a free transfer, in her prime, after returning to a near-career-high league workload at Bayern. She brings WSL knowledge, four years of title-winning experience in Germany, recent attacking output and the ability to take responsibility in several phases of the game.

Most importantly, she strengthens Arsenal twice: she improves the first-choice midfield and raises the standard of the rotation behind it.

The best version of this signing is not Stanway carrying Arsenal to the title by herself. It is Arsenal remaining a title-level team when the opponent changes, when the game opens up, when Mariona moves forward and when six matches arrive in 18 days.

Manchester City finished four points ahead because they produced the stronger league season. Arsenal’s response is to build a squad capable of sustaining its best football for longer. Stanway is a decisive part of that response.

1. Introduction

London City Lionesses are only seven years old. Alexia Putellas has spent almost twice that long in Barcelona’s first team.

That contrast is the starting point for understanding this transfer. One side is still defining what it wants to become at the highest level of English football. The other is a player whose career has already helped define an era: more than 500 Barcelona appearances, four European Cups, two Ballons d’Or and a place at the centre of Spain’s rise to world champions.

This move is more interesting as a football decision than as a meeting of a young club and a famous name. London City finished sixth in their first WSL season. They were competitive, ambitious and capable of troubling stronger opponents, but they were not consistent in possession or chance creation. Putellas arrives with the specific qualities to improve how those parts connect.

Whether that connection works will tell us much more about London City’s project than the announcement itself.

2. The transfer

London City officially confirmed Putellas on 8 July 2026 and gave her the No. 11 shirt. She joins after leaving Barcelona at the end of a 14-season first-team career, with her previous contract having expired. The deal is reported to run until 2029.

What London City have unquestionably acquired is a left-footed creative midfielder who can play centrally, from the left or, when required, as a false nine. They have also acquired a captain, a proven scorer from midfield and a player who was named the 2025–26 UEFA Women’s Champions League Player of the Season.

3. Why this matters

Putellas did not merely collect trophies at Barcelona. She was present as the team developed from a domestic power into one of Europe’s defining sides, becoming their regular captain and club-record women’s scorer along the way. She left Barcelona with 38 trophies, including four Champions Leagues and ten league titles.

She becomes the first Ballon d’Or Féminin winner to play in the WSL. That gives the move a clear place in the competition’s history and makes her arguably one of the highest-profile arrivals the league has seen, without considering transfer fees.

The destination is what makes the move unusual. Putellas has not left one established European superpower for another. London City are entering only their second WSL campaign and did not qualify for Europe. They are the competition’s first fully independent club, without the institutional shelter of a men’s football operation, and their football identity is still under construction.

For London City, the signing compresses years of reputation-building into a single moment. A player of Putellas’s standing choosing the club gives their ambition credibility. But credibility is not the same as achievement. The more important test is whether the organisation can build a side in which her qualities remain decisive.

4. What problem is London City trying to solve?

London City’s first WSL season was successful in the basic sense that a promoted team established itself in mid-table. They finished sixth with 27 points from 22 matches, scoring 28 goals and conceding 35. Eight wins demonstrated that they belonged at the level, while the 22-point gap to third place showed how far they remained from Champions League qualification.

Their football under Eder Maestre contained promising ideas but not yet a settled expression. They used 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-2 structures and often looked to combine possession with vertical attacks and assertive pressing. Across the full season, they recorded 487 touches in the opposition box, the seventh-highest total in the WSL, equivalent to just over 22 per match. That placed them comfortably above the league’s lowest-volume attacks, but still well behind Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea, who averaged almost 40 opposition-box touches per match between them.

These observations should not be treated as permanent traits. Maestre arrived only in January, inheriting a heavily rebuilt squad during its first top-flight campaign.

London City need a player who can connect controlled possession to the final action. They need someone comfortable receiving between lines, deciding whether to retain or accelerate the ball, and supplying runners before the defence is set. Putellas can do all of those things. She also gives them another goal threat arriving from behind the forward line.

She does not solve the entire attacking problem herself. Creativity depends on the movement around the ball, while a secure attack depends on the structure left behind it. But the recruitment logic is clear: London City are adding an elite central reference to a team that too often struggled to turn territorial ambition into consistent chances. The next question is whether Putellas still has the workload and production to provide that influence consistently.

5. Alexia’s football journey

Putellas’s recent career cannot be described by a simple age curve. Her peak 2021–22 season brought 34 goals in all competitions and a second consecutive Ballon d’Or. Then, on the eve of the 2022 European Championship, she tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee.

The effect on her playing time was stark. She went from 3,118 minutes in all competitions in 2021–22 to 114 the following season. Her return continued in 2023–24, although she underwent arthroscopy on her left knee in December 2023. That season ended with 1,411 minutes and 11 goals in all competitions: meaningful production, but not yet her old workload.

The next two campaigns changed the picture. Putellas played 2,797 minutes and scored 22 times in 2024–25, then reached 2,926 minutes and 20 goals in 2025–26. Her domestic league return eased from 16 goals and 11 assists to nine and seven, but her European contribution moved in the other direction. She recorded seven goals and seven assists in 11 Champions League appearances and was named the competition’s player of the season.

This contrast is important. It prevents an easy claim that she is either back to her absolute peak or in straightforward decline. Her 2021–22 scoring season remains unmatched, and age broadens the uncertainty around future workload. At the same time, her latest European performances were those of an elite footballer influencing the highest level.

This is therefore not a retirement move as many might claim. Putellas leaves Barcelona after a season in which she played almost 3,000 minutes, won another Champions League and led the competition for combined goals and assists. London City are signing a historic player, but they are not signing history alone.

6. What can previous WSL transfers tell us?

Transfer projection is difficult because a player’s first season depends on more than their previous output. Timing, injuries, tactical role, squad competition, destination-club strength and the number of available league matches can all affect the outcome. Two apparently similar arrivals may therefore receive very different opportunities. To provide some context, we looked at recent players who moved from Liga F to the WSL.

Oroz is the closest positional comparison. She moved from Real Madrid to a Tottenham side in the same broad destination-strength band, but was six years younger and arrived after substantially fewer minutes and attacking contributions.

Caldentey offers the strongest football-environment comparison. Like Putellas, she left Barcelona for England after a productive Liga F season, and her prior minutes, goals and assists were strikingly similar. The comparison breaks down because Caldentey was four years younger and joined an established top-three Arsenal side. She subsequently recorded 1,775 WSL minutes, nine goals and five assists.

Rolfö provides the closest age and club-origin precedent. She was 31 when she left Barcelona for Manchester United, but was classified as a forward and joined a club coming off a third-place finish. Her first WSL campaign brought 1,062 minutes, three goals and one assist.

Nunes and Payne are looser comparisons. Both came from Liga F and help represent different destination contexts, but both were forwards with different workloads and functions. Nunes produced 727 minutes, two goals and one assist for Aston Villa; Payne recorded 1,372 minutes, one goal and five assists for Everton.

The reasonable lesson is not that Putellas should finish somewhere between those outcomes. It is that even a relatively narrow route—Liga F to the WSL—can produce very different results. Four of the five players are classified as forwards, which also highlights the limits of broad positional comparisons. These examples provide useful context, but they do not tell us exactly what will happen next.

7. What could go wrong?

The first uncertainty is physical. Putellas is 32 and has a history of an ACL injury, a later arthroscopy on the same knee and a shorter calf injury. Her 2025–26 workload is encouraging, but previous availability cannot guarantee future availability. Sensible rotation would be management, not evidence of failure.

The second is adaptation. This will be her first senior club season outside Spain. London City cannot assume that Barcelona’s territorial control, close passing options and volume of final-third possession will follow her to England.

The third is squad balance. London City have accumulated several players who prefer central or creative roles. If Maestre cannot establish a clear hierarchy and complementary movement, Putellas could spend too much time receiving deep or facing a crowded attack.

Finally, there is the danger of asking one player to represent the entire project. London City conceded 35 league goals as well as scoring only 28. Putellas can improve their attacking connections; she cannot by herself organise the press, protect transitions and close a 22-point gap to third place.

8. Verdict

Is this a sensible transfer? Yes, with conditions.

London City have recruited a type of player they genuinely need: a central creator who can control possession, produce the final action and add goals from midfield. Her latest season offers strong evidence that the football level remains high. Her experience also fits a club trying to establish standards quickly.

The conditions are structural. She needs runners around her, protection behind her and a workload plan that respects age and injury history without treating her as a ceremonial player. London City also need to resist the idea that accumulating talent is the same as building a team.

The signing makes football sense because Putellas can improve how London City play. Whether it succeeds will depend on whether London City improve the environment in which she plays.

Did her arrival move London City closer to the league’s leading clubs?
Putellas cannot close the gap alone, but we will assess whether London City improved on sixth place, reduced the 22-point gap to third and became more competitive against the WSL’s strongest teams.

Introduction

The 2025–26 Barclays Women’s Super League exposed a new visibility paradox. Total dedicated coverage rose 76% to 697 hours; however, three-minute reach (the number of unique viewers who watched at least three consecutive minutes) fell 10% to 11.06 million. More WSL football was available than ever, but fewer people saw it, with fewer fixtures on BBC, more scheduling clashes and new early broadcast slots fragmenting the audience.

This is not a simple collapse in interest. Those who watched stayed longer, with average watch time rising 10% to a record two hours and nine minutes, while viewing hours remained broadly flat. Beyond television, the league generated a record 669 million social video views, although the main growth engine shifted decisively from YouTube to Instagram.

Bottom Line Up Front: The WSL secured more coverage and deeper engagement, but not greater reach. Its next challenge is turning wider availability into genuine audience growth.

More Games, Fewer Eyes 📉

Reach down, engagement up

The headline WSL broadcast figures tell a split story. Coverage expanded dramatically, but audience growth did not follow:

• Three-minute reach: 11.06 million, down 10%

• Viewing hours: 23.78 million, down 1%

• Average watch time: 2:08:58, up 10%

• Coverage hours: 697, up 76%

Taken together, the figures point to a smaller but stickier audience. Fewer people encountered WSL coverage, but those who did stayed for longer. With coverage rising 76% while total viewing hours remained broadly flat, the additional programming appears to have deepened consumption among existing fans rather than attracted large numbers of new viewers.

Sky Built Habit, BBC Built Reach

The broadcaster split explains why more WSL coverage did not translate into greater overall reach. The BBC reduced its output, while Sky dramatically expanded its schedule, but the two platforms served very different audience functions.

Sky more than doubled its live linear output, from 35 matches to 72. That additional volume increased viewing hours and substantially deepened average watch time, even though the number of people reached declined. Sky became the platform where committed viewers watched more WSL, more often.

The BBC moved in the opposite direction. Its reach and viewing hours both fell as coverage declined, with only 13 matches shown on BBC One or BBC Two, down from 15 the previous season. The clearest interpretation is that Sky built viewing habit, while the BBC remained the league’s gateway to mass reach.

Sky delivered more WSL. The BBC still delivered broader visibility.

The Noon-Slot Reset ⏰

The biggest scheduling change of 2025–26 was the expansion of the Sunday noon slot. Sky placed far more matches into earlier windows, while the traditional Sunday afternoon block became far less central. Viewer hours followed that shift: noon and Saturday lunchtime gained importance, while the old 2–5pm Sunday window lost ground. The result was not just a different schedule, but a different audience pattern, one spread across more windows and fewer shared viewing moments.

The likely driver was avoiding direct clashes with the Premier League’s Sunday afternoon broadcasts. But in practice, it weakened one of the league’s most valuable assets. Mid-afternoon slots typically draw larger casual audiences than noon kick-offs, when people are still finishing weekend routines. The shift also created a clash with WSL 2 match-goers, who have a strong overlap with the WSL audience. Moving fixtures to earlier windows filled Sky's schedule, but at the cost of the most important viewing window the league had last season.

The Loyal Core Got Stickier 🔁

Fewer viewers, stronger viewing habits

Even as overall reach declined, the viewers who did tune in came back more often. Looking at how many separate occasions each viewer watched WSL coverage compared to last season:

• 2+ occasions: 44%, unchanged

• 3+ occasions: up from 25% to 26%

• 4+ occasions: up from 18% to 19%

• 5+ occasions: up from 13% to 14%

• 10+ occasions: up from 4% to 6%

Combined with average watch time reaching a record two hours and nine minutes, the pattern is clear: fewer people encountered WSL coverage, but the regular audience watched for longer and returned more often.

The strategic challenge is therefore not retaining the committed core. It is converting casual viewers into regular ones when more fixtures sit behind a paywall or within unfamiliar broadcast windows.

The WSL’s core audience is deepening. Its next growth opportunity lies outside that core.

The BBC Still Owns the Big Moments 🏆

Free-to-air remains the WSL’s biggest stage

Every one of the ten largest live WSL audiences in 2025–26 came on BBC. Not one Sky-only broadcast made the list.

The pattern is difficult to ignore. Sky supplied the volume, but the BBC continued to deliver the league’s largest shared audiences. The Manchester clubs were especially prominent, appearing in three of the top four fixtures.

There is still a warning sign. The season’s peak audience of 675.9k was below the 732k recorded for Arsenal vs Chelsea last season and the 813k Manchester derby peak from two seasons ago. The BBC remains indispensable, but the ceiling for marquee WSL broadcasts has continued to soften. Is that ceiling now structural, or can the right fixture still break through?

Sky delivered frequency. The BBC still delivered the occasion.

The 2025–26 Digital Story

Record scale, but a very different engine

Away from the linear screen, 2025–26 was the biggest digital season in the WSL’s history. Combined video views across the league’s owned accounts reached 669 million, up 85% year on year, comfortably above the previous high of 553 million in 2022–23 and nearly double last season’s 363 million.

But the composition of that record changed completely. Last season, the story was YouTube. This season, it is Instagram, which alone accounted for 371 million of the 669 million total.

• Instagram: 65m to 371m

• TikTok: 115m to 162m

• Facebook: 139m to 113m

• YouTube: 44m to 23m

On the reported figures, Instagram contributed all of the WSL’s net year-on-year growth. TikTok also grew strongly, but those gains were offset by declines on Facebook and YouTube. This was not broad-based growth across every platform. It was a record digital season powered overwhelmingly by one channel.

It is worth noting that Meta’s change to how it counts video views (moving from 3-second to 1-second views) inflates this number. However, even accounting for that, the shift in audience behavior toward Instagram is undeniable.

Instagram alone accounted for more views in 2025–26 than all other WSL digital platforms combined. That concentration represents a significant opportunity for the league, but also a vulnerability if Instagram’s algorithm shifts or its engagement model changes.

The WSL reached record digital scale in 2025–26, but almost all of that growth came through Instagram.

YouTube: The Correction

YouTube is the one platform that moved decisively backwards. Total WSL views fell 48% to 23 million, dropping the league from second place last season to sixth. Views per video declined 35%, from 77k to 50k, while uploads fell 19%. Yet the WSL still ranked third globally for YouTube views per video, suggesting that the content itself continued to perform relatively well when audiences encountered it.

The deeper explanation lies in the loss of live football. Last season, YouTube was not merely a social-content platform; it was one of the league’s principal broadcasters. Seventy of the WSL’s 132 fixtures, more than half of the season, were streamed free on the Barclays WSL YouTube channel, giving supporters one clear destination for live matches every weekend. Those full-game streams generated long viewing sessions, repeat traffic and a powerful first-season novelty effect.

Under the new rights cycle, live coverage shifted decisively towards Sky and the BBC, leaving YouTube with a much smaller live-match role than in 2024–25. With fewer full matches, and the remaining free coverage spread across different channels, the weekly viewing habit built the previous season weakened.

The fall should be read as a distribution correction, not simply a collapse in interest. YouTube lost the live-match engine that had driven much of its previous growth.

YouTube did not lose momentum; it lost the product that created that momentum.

What the Season Really Tells Us

The 2025–26 WSL season was not a simple story of growth or decline. Coverage expanded dramatically, but reach fell. Sky deepened viewing among committed fans, while the BBC continued to deliver the league’s biggest shared audiences. Online, the WSL reached record scale, but that growth was concentrated in Instagram as YouTube lost the live-match role that had powered its breakout season.

The central challenge is now clear: the WSL does not lack content or committed supporters. It needs to turn wider availability into discovery, convert casual viewers into regular ones, and ensure that fragmentation across broadcasters, timeslots and platforms does not weaken the moments that create mass attention.

That raises a question the next rights cycle will have to answer. The BBC’s reach is falling as its fixtures decline, but it still delivered every one of the season’s ten largest audiences. Sky built habit, but habit alone does not grow a league. Can the WSL afford to keep losing its biggest shop window, or is the future simply a smaller, more committed audience behind a paywall?

The WSL has built depth. Whether it can rebuild breadth without free-to-air prominence is the question that will define the next chapter.

The champion changed. The power structure did not.

Manchester City won the 2025–26 Women’s Super League on 55 points, ending Chelsea’s six-title run and claiming their first league title since 2016. Arsenal finished four points behind despite losing just once all season. Chelsea, unbeaten champions a year ago, fell to third. Leicester finished bottom on nine points and were relegated after losing the inaugural play-off to Charlton on penalties.

That is the headline. The deeper story is more revealing.

Across the six fully comparable WSL seasons since the 12-team, 22-game format arrived, the champion has finally changed – but the hierarchy has barely moved. Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United have taken every single top-three finish across that period. The WSL has a new champion, but not yet a new power structure.

📊 Five numbers that define the 2025–26 WSL season

Before going deeper, five numbers frame the season.

+12 – City’s points swing from last season. They moved from 43 points and fourth place in 2024–25 to 55 points and the title in 2025–26.

−11 – Chelsea’s fall from their unbeaten title year. A side that finished on 60 points in 2024–25 dropped to 49 and third, turning dominance into vulnerability in the space of one campaign.

1 – Arsenal’s total league defeats. They lost just once all season, but six draws left them four points short of the title. Convert three of those draws into wins and Arsenal lift the trophy.

18/18 – The number of top-three finishes taken by Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United across the six-season sample. The champion changed, but the elite circle did not.

44–50 – The third-place points range in every fully comparable WSL season since 2020–21. The entry price for the top three has barely moved, even as the league beneath it has shifted.

Those five numbers explain the season better than the trophy alone. City’s rise was real. Chelsea’s fall was real. Arsenal’s near miss was real. But the deeper structure of the league remains stubbornly familiar.

📈 The headline: City improved at exactly the right time

The simplest explanation for the change of champions is that two clubs moved in opposite directions at once.

Manchester City climbed from fourth to first, a +12-point swing from 43 to 55. They cut goals conceded from 28 to 19 while lifting goals scored from 49 to 62, turning a +21 goal difference into +43. That is not a side that edged a few more tight games; it is a side that became materially better at both ends of the pitch.

City had been the league’s nearly-team – finishing 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 2nd and 4th across the previous five seasons without ever crossing the line. This year they finally did, pairing the league’s best attack with a genuinely elite defence.

Chelsea went the other way. After finishing unbeaten on 60 points in 2024–25 – the most decisive title win of the 12-team era by points margin – they dropped to 49 and third.

Goals scored fell from 56 to 44, goals conceded rose from 13 to 20, and their goal difference collapsed from +43 to +24.

City improved. Chelsea regressed. Arsenal stayed exactly where they have lived for most of this cycle: close enough to matter, not quite close enough to win.

📉 Chelsea: the decline was already in the data

Chelsea’s drop feels sudden if you only watch the trophy. The underlying numbers tell a slower, more honest story.

The defence stayed elite right up until this year, but the attack had already started to move in the wrong direction. From a peak of 71 goals in 2023–24, Chelsea’s league output fell to 56, then 44. Across the first five seasons of the 12-team era, they could absorb pressure because their goal difference kept creating distance from the rest of the league. Once that margin narrowed, the room for error vanished.

The unbeaten 60-point campaign in 2024–25 now looks slightly different in hindsight. It was still a brilliant season, but it also disguised an attack that had already fallen fifteen goals below its 2023–24 peak. This season, the paper tore. Goals fell again, goals conceded rose, and Chelsea’s goal difference dropped to +24 – less than half of their 2023–24 level.

In year-on-year terms, the eleven-point fall from 60 to 49 is the largest single-season points drop by a reigning WSL champion in the comparable era. Across Chelsea’s title run in this 12-team format, their sharpest previous points fall was three. This was not a minor regression. It was a structural break.

But the attacking decline becomes even clearer when you move from team totals to individual scorers.

Chelsea’s dynasty always had a reliable attacking reference point. Most obviously, Sam Kerr gave them guaranteed penalty-box production for several seasons. Even in 2023–24, when Chelsea’s total output peaked at 71 league goals, Lauren James delivered a double-figure WSL campaign. The following year, Chelsea still won the title unbeaten, but no player reached double figures in the league. By 2025–26, that problem had not gone away.

Kerr’s ACL injury removed Chelsea’s most reliable scorer for most of the period in which the attacking decline began. Lauren James, the player who carried the double-figure burden in 2023–24, was not fully available across the next two campaigns. Mayra Ramírez, signed to add power and penalty-box presence, also had her own injury interruptions. Chelsea still had depth, but the profile changed: more shared scoring, less guaranteed elite output.

And now the question becomes even sharper. Kerr is leaving, which means the one player Chelsea historically knew could guarantee that level of production is no longer part of the solution. Unless they replace that with another durable, high-volume scorer – or find a new system that creates the same output collectively – the attacking decline remains the clearest unresolved issue of their post-dynasty phase.

Chelsea’s decline was not only about the season they lost. The warning signs were already there in the season they won.

Chelsea’s dynasty was real – but rarely comfortable

Look only at the recent list of champions and the story feels simple: Chelsea ruled the WSL. Six straight titles overall, five of them in the fully comparable 12-team era. On the surface, that is a dynasty.

But the title margins tell a more complicated story.

The dynasty was real, but it was rarely a procession. Before Chelsea’s 12-point runaway in 2024–25, the previous four titles in the 12-team era were decided by two points, one point, two points and goal difference. Chelsea kept finishing first, but the gap to second was often narrow. Most seasons, they were not miles clear of the league. They were just better at getting over the line.

That is what makes the 2025–26 campaign especially interesting. City’s four-point title margin was not as tight as the knife-edge years of Chelsea’s reign, but it was also nowhere near the 12-point gap that made 2024–25 feel like a one-team season. In that sense, the league did not suddenly become competitive again. The better reading is that 2024–25 was the anomaly – and 2025–26 pulled the title race back towards the pattern that had existed before it.

The bigger question now is whether City can do what Chelsea did for so long: turn one title into repeated titles.

There is a real case for City. They improved at both ends of the pitch, finished with the league’s best attack, paired it with an elite defensive record, and finally converted years of near-misses into a title. More importantly, they still have the division’s most reliable high-volume scorer. Bunny Shaw staying gives City something Chelsea are now searching for: a durable, Golden Boot-level forward who can keep producing across a full season.

That does not make this the start of a City dynasty. One title is a breakthrough, not an era. But the power question has changed. Chelsea no longer look inevitable. Arsenal remain close enough to punish any slip. And City, after years of nearly arriving, now have the trophy, the squad base and the centre-forward to ask a different question.

Not whether they can win the WSL.

Whether they can hold it.

⏱️ Arsenal: the league’s metronome

No club better captures the strange middle ground between excellence and frustration than Arsenal.

Across the six fully comparable seasons, Arsenal have finished 3rd, 2nd, 3rd, 3rd, 2nd and 2nd. Never outside the top three. Never lower than third. Always close enough to matter.

That level of consistency would define an era in most leagues. In the WSL, it has still not been enough to win one.

The deeper frustration is that Arsenal have had title-winning ingredients, but not always in the same season. In 2021–22, they produced arguably their most complete league profile of the period: 65 goals scored, only 10 conceded, a +55 goal difference and just one defeat. They still finished one point behind Chelsea.

The 2024–25 season now looks like a different kind of missed opportunity. Arsenal scored 62 league goals, the highest total in the division and six more than Chelsea. That was a championship-level attack. But the other side of the table told the story: 26 goals conceded, Arsenal’s worst defensive record across the six-season sample. Chelsea conceded 13. The gap was not in firepower; it was in control.

In 2025–26, Arsenal corrected that problem. Goals conceded fell from 26 to 14, and they lost only once in the league. But the attack also dropped from 62 goals to 53, and six draws left them four points short. In one season, they had the goals but not the defensive platform. In the next, they had the defensive platform but not quite enough attacking edge to turn dominance into wins.

That is the uncomfortable part of Arsenal’s long-term profile. They are not a boom-and-bust side. They have not disappeared from the title conversation. They have been there every year, usually with a strong goal-difference profile, but the margins at the very top have kept going against them.

Chelsea spent years finding ways to get over the line. City finally found their way in 2025–26. Arsenal remain the side most consistently close enough to ask the question, but still searching for the season where consistency turns into control.

Arsenal’s problem has not been relevance. It has been conversion: turning years of top-three stability into one title-winning campaign.

The champion changed; the elite barely did

The biggest long-term finding in the data is not that Manchester City won the league. It is how little the top of the table has actually moved.

Across the last six fully comparable seasons, the same four clubs have taken every single top-three finish: Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United. Eighteen top-three places were available. All eighteen went to the same group.

That is the clearest evidence that the WSL has changed at the top without really opening up. The order has shifted. The champion has changed. But the cast has barely moved.

There is one important nuance. In 2025–26, the gap between fourth and fifth was just four points, with Manchester United on 40 and Tottenham on 36. That is the smallest fourth-to-fifth gap in the six-season sample, and it matters. It suggests the barrier below the established four may be softening.

But softening is not the same as breaking. Tottenham’s fifth-place finish was a major step forward, and London City Lionesses’ sixth-place debut was one of the stories of the season. Still, neither reached the top four. The top-four picture remained familiar.

So the WSL’s structure is doing two things at once. First place became more open because Chelsea’s grip finally broke. The wider elite did not. For all the movement beneath them, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United still own the top-three picture.

The champion changed. The hierarchy did not.

🎯 The most stable number in the league

If you wanted to pick the single most predictable feature of the modern WSL, it is the points required to finish third.

Forty-four to fifty, every single year. That range is remarkably narrow. For all the movement in individual clubs, promoted sides, relegated sides and middle-table form, the entry price for the top three has barely moved.

That matters because it shows how fixed the elite layer of the WSL still is. A club trying to break into the top three cannot simply have a good season. It probably needs to build towards something close to a 48-to-50-point campaign.

Tottenham are the best example of how high that bar still is. They finished fifth in 2025–26, produced their best WSL campaign, and ended on 36 points. That is a major step forward, but it still left them 13 points behind third-placed Chelsea and roughly five wins short of the 50-point line. In practical terms, even their best season did not yet put them within touching distance of the top three.

London City Lionesses make the gap look even clearer. Their debut WSL season was impressive, especially for a promoted side, but finishing sixth on 27 points still left them more than twenty points off the usual top-three pace. That is not a small step. It is a full structural climb.

No such stability exists elsewhere in the table. The sixth-place line has moved more, the survival line has moved more, and the middle of the league has been far less predictable. The top three is different: a closed group with a fairly fixed points threshold.

To break the WSL’s top three, ambition is not enough. The target is roughly fifty points.

Below the elite, movement was real – but uneven

Below the established top four, 2025–26 did produce movement. It just did not produce a genuine breach.

Tottenham were the clearest risers. They climbed from eleventh to fifth, moved from 20 points to 36, and cut their goal difference from -18 to -3. That is a major step forward in one season. But the earlier point still holds: even that level of progress left them four points behind Manchester United in fourth, thirteen behind Chelsea in third, and roughly five wins short of the usual top-three line.

London City Lionesses were the other major story. A promoted side finishing sixth on debut, with 27 points and a -7 goal difference, is a strong first WSL season. They did not look like a team simply trying to survive. But sixth on 27 points also shows the scale of the climb. The gap from a good debut to the top three remains enormous.

The fallers show the other side of that volatility. Liverpool dropped to eleventh on 17 points, continuing a pattern of instability after finishing fourth only two seasons earlier. Leicester finished bottom on nine points, scored just eleven goals and ended with a -41 goal difference. That was the lowest attacking return in the six-season sample and a reminder that the bottom of the WSL remains fragile.

So the league below the elite is not static. There is movement, volatility and room for clubs to change their status quickly. But movement is not the same as upward mobility into the top three. The middle can shuffle. The top still takes far more to enter.

Beneath the elite, the WSL moved. At the elite level, it barely opened.

🧭 Reset, not revolution

The final reading of 2025–26 is this: the dynasty is over, but the hierarchy is not.

Manchester City changed the ending. They improved at both ends, won their first league title since 2016, and now have the squad base and centre-forward to ask whether one title can become something more.

Chelsea no longer look inevitable. Their points fell, their goals fell, their goal difference narrowed, and the absence of a reliable double-figure league scorer became impossible to ignore. The warning signs were already there in the season they won.

Arsenal remain the league’s great constant: always close, always relevant, still searching for the campaign where consistency becomes control.

And beneath them, the table did move. Tottenham rose. London City Lionesses arrived well. Liverpool fell. Leicester were exposed. The middle of the league had genuine change, but the top-three picture barely shifted.

That is the difference between a reset and a revolution. A revolution would mean the league’s power structure breaking open. This was not the case. This was the end of Chelsea’s dominance, the return of a more contested title race, and the beginning of a new question at the top.

Can City hold what they have just won? Can Chelsea rebuild their attack? Can Arsenal finally turn stability into a title? Can anyone outside the established four get close enough to make the top three uncomfortable?

The 2025–26 season did not answer all of that. But it did answer one thing clearly.

The WSL has a new champion.

But It does not yet have a new hierarchy.

Introduction: a rebound, but not a full recovery

The 2025–26 Barclays Women’s Super League attendance picture tells a story of partial recovery, growing concentration, and a league still trying to turn major-event crowds into a more consistent week-to-week audience.

The headline numbers point upward. The WSL drew 902,981 spectators across 132 matches this season, an average of 6,841 per match. That’s a 2.7% rise on the 2024–25 total of 879,215 – enough, on its own, to call this a recovery season. But it still falls 69,320 short of the 2023–24 peak of 972,301, a 7.1% gap across two seasons that hasn’t closed. In simple terms, the league recovered from last season’s dip – but did not fully return to its recent high point.

Beneath the headline number, the picture gets more complicated. Arsenal aren’t just the league’s attendance leaders; they are the central engine of the WSL's attendance base. Their 371,886 home attendance total accounted for 41.2% of all WSL spectators in 2025–26. Remove Arsenal from the league total, and the rest of the WSL actually fell again, from 562,324 in 2024–25 to 531,095 in 2025–26.

There are still positive signs. Everton made one of the strongest year-on-year jumps, the league recorded no sub-1,000 attendances for the first time across the three seasons, and the median crowd rose from 3,070 to 3,236. But the wider trend remains uneven. Eight of eleven returning clubs saw home attendance decline this season – including five (Tottenham, Liverpool, Manchester United, Brighton and Manchester City) by margins of 10% or more. Around 60% of total attendance still came from matches that drew over 10,000 fans.

So the 2025–26 story is not simply that WSL attendances went up. It is that the league’s ceiling remains high, Arsenal’s dominance is growing, the lower-end floor has improved, but the middle of the attendance market still looks fragile. The next phase of WSL growth will depend not only on selling out the biggest fixtures, but on lifting the regular matchday base across more clubs.

The league-wide trend

Three seasons of WSL data make the shape of this recovery clearer.

From 2023–24 to 2024–25, total attendance fell by 93,086 – a 9.6% drop. From 2024–25 to 2025–26, it rose by 23,766 – a 2.7% recovery. Encouraging, but still 69,320 below the 2023–24 high.

Record crowds

This season’s biggest single fixture drew 56,537 – the third-highest WSL crowd on record, but a touch below the 56,784 peak of 2024–25 and the all-time record of 60,160 set in 2023–24. The league produced 21 matches at 10,000+ attendance, more than either of the two previous seasons. But only two crossed the 40,000 mark this season, against four in 2024–25 and seven in 2023–24. The very biggest fixtures got rarer, but the broader 10,000+ tier grew.

📈 The Arsenal effect – the WSL central engine

Arsenal didn’t just lead the WSL attendance table in 2025–26. They drew more than four in every ten spectators across the entire league season.

Arsenal’s share has climbed in each of the last three seasons. That hasn’t happened by accident. Arsenal’s move into the Emirates has been a gradual, deliberate scaling rather than an opportunistic one – a handful of showcase fixtures in 2023–24, nine of eleven home matches at the Emirates in 2024–25, and then – for the first time in the club’s history – all eleven WSL home games at the Emirates in 2025–26.

It was a sensible way to scale up: give the matchday operation a year to bed in at nine fixtures, then take the final step in year two. And it’s now a permanent commitment – Arsenal have already confirmed that all 13 of their 2026–27 WSL home fixtures, in an expanded 14-team league, will again be played at the Emirates.

The hidden trend: without Arsenal, the league is still falling

Probably the most important number in this season’s data isn’t 902,981. It’s what’s left when you take Arsenal away.

The headline number says the WSL recovered in 2025–26. But remove Arsenal, and the rest of the league actually fell again – continuing a two-season decline that began in 2023–24. That’s the tension at the heart of this year’s data: a league that looks healthier in aggregate, but whose growth is being carried by a single club.

Club-by-club: the full picture

Among clubs present in both seasons, here is the full year-on-year change:

The recovery in 2025–26 is, in net terms, an Arsenal-and-Everton story. Together those two clubs added 86,817 to the league total. Across the other nine clubs that played in both seasons, the net change was -77,254 – with eight of those nine clubs declining year-on-year, and only Aston Villa adding meaningfully on the upside.

Chelsea, United and City – still powerful, but softer

Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City still sit in the league’s upper attendance tier. But all three declined year-on-year, and the gap between their biggest showcase fixtures and their regular home gates remains the defining feature of their season.

🔵 Chelsea

Chelsea’s home total fell from 103,103 to 93,705 – a drop of 9,398 – and they lost their place in the 100k club. The intuitive reading is that they hosted fewer Stamford Bridge occasions; the data says the opposite. They actually played one more fixture at the Bridge this season (four to three), and the Kingsmeadow baseline barely moved (average 3,497 to 3,357). The shortfall sits entirely at the Bridge end of the schedule, where the average gate dropped 30% year-on-year, from 25,043 to 17,552. Every like-for-like big fixture fell – Arsenal held up best at -11% (34,302 to 30,545), Manchester City took the heaviest hit at -27% (19,499 to 14,182). The single biggest swing came from scheduling: Liverpool was a 21,327 Bridge fixture last May; this season it was held at Kingsmeadow and drew 3,973.

Chelsea have now announced a full thirteen-game Bridge slate for 2026-27, which should be a structural tailwind – but the contraction in average Bridge gates raises a question: without deliberate marketing effort and narrative-building around these occasions, moving from four Bridge fixtures to thirteen risks diluting the “event” status of each one. The venue change alone won’t move the needle unless Chelsea commit to advertising, publicity, and creating genuine scarcity around these fixtures.

🔴 Manchester United

United’s home total slipped from 81,285 to 67,958 – down 13,327 – but the deeper trajectory is sharper than the year-on-year comparison suggests. Two seasons ago they pulled 120,526 finishing second in the league for total attendance. They’ve now dropped to third in each of the last two seasons, down roughly 44% from their 2023-24 peak.

The mechanism this year is structural: one fewer Old Trafford fixture. They hosted two Old Trafford games in 2023-24 (72,352 combined) and two again in 2024-25 (40,226), but only one this season – the Manchester derby. A second Old Trafford fixture against Aston Villa was originally scheduled before being moved to Leigh, which alone costs the season total a chunk.

The harder story sits inside the derby itself: at Old Trafford, the Manchester derby has now declined three years running – 43,615 → 31,465 → 24,983 – losing roughly 19,000 from its peak at the same venue. That’s a demand problem at their marquee fixtures, not a scheduling one.

The Arsenal fixture at Leigh is the standout: 8,312 → 8,348 → 8,665, three consecutive club-record gates all bumping against the ground’s ceiling. That’s demand constrained by capacity rather than interest – it could go significantly bigger if relocated to Old Trafford. The derby has lost 19,000 in two years at the biggest ground; Arsenal keeps hitting the roof at the smallest one. The Old Trafford strategy clearly needs to be sharper.

🔵 Manchester City

City delivered a very strong on-pitch performance this season, winning their first WSL title in ten years. But that success did not translate into a bigger home crowd. Their total home attendance fell from 71,901 to 61,056 – down 10,845 – and the decline appears to be driven mainly by venue mix, with one important fixture-level exception.

The biggest structural change was the reduction in Etihad fixtures. City moved from three Etihad matches last season to two this season. The Tottenham fixture, which drew 10,319 at the Etihad last season, was played at the Joie Stadium this year and drew 4,575. That single venue switch explains a large part of the overall fall.

The two remaining Etihad fixtures averaged slightly higher than last season – 15,374 vs 14,706 – so the showcase venue itself does not appear to be losing broad demand. There were simply fewer Etihad fixtures on the calendar.

At the Joie Stadium, the everyday baseline barely moved. City averaged 3,473 there last season and 3,368 this season. Individual Joie fixtures ranged from 2,267 against West Ham to 4,869 against Liverpool, but the distribution was broadly similar year-on-year.

The key exception is the Manchester derby. City’s Etihad derby attendance fell from 22,497 to 17,520 – down roughly 5,000 for the same fixture at the same venue. That mirrors the softening seen in United’s derby at Old Trafford and suggests the City–United matchup cooled at both ends, rather than this being only a City-specific issue.

The bigger question now is whether City’s title-winning campaign produces an attendance bump next season – especially if the club keeps a stronger Etihad presence in the fixture calendar.

⚖️ The middle is shifting – Everton up, Liverpool and Spurs down

This is where the 2025–26 story gets genuinely fresh.

🔵 Everton – the standout riser

Everton more than doubled their home total this season, from 21,512 to 53,334 – a 147.9% increase and the second-largest absolute gain among established clubs, behind Arsenal. They ranked 10th of 12 by home total last season; they now sit 6th.

The mechanism is structural rather than organic. Everton effectively retired Walton Hall Park as a default venue: last season they played nine of eleven fixtures there, this season none. Goodison Park became the regular home (ten fixtures, up from two), and a single showcase fixture against Manchester United at Hill Dickinson Stadium drew 18,154 – that one game alone drew over 80% of Everton’s entire home total in either of the previous two seasons.

Alongside Arsenal, Everton is one of only two established clubs driving the league’s headline rebound – without these two, the rest of the league’s attendance fell 11.7%.

🔴 Liverpool – a sharp pullback

Liverpool’s home total fell from 77,253 to 58,328 – down 18,925, the second-biggest fall in the league. The mechanism here isn’t venue access: Liverpool played the same three Anfield fixtures in both seasons. What changed is how many people turned up.

Anfield average attendance dropped 25% (16,152 → 12,113), and the smaller-venue average dropped 24% (3,600 → 2,755). The decline runs cleanly across both venue tiers in roughly equal proportion – broad demand pullback rather than a structural shift.

⚪ Tottenham – the biggest absolute fall

Tottenham’s home total fell from 58,651 to 39,286 – down 19,365, the largest absolute decline of any club. But the fall is almost entirely one fixture: the Arsenal derby moving venue.

In 2024-25, Spurs hosted Arsenal at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and drew 28,852 – 49% of their entire home total for the season. In 2025-26, the Arsenal home fixture moved to BetWright Stadium and drew 6,788. That single swing is -22,064, which exceeds Spurs’ entire annual decline. Strip it out and the rest of the schedule nets slightly positive – their smaller-venue matches collectively rose from 12,998 to 17,804.

So while Liverpool and Spurs both posted big falls, the mechanisms differ. Liverpool is broad demand softening; Spurs is one missing showcase fixture.

The middle of the table didn’t move together – it mostly fell. Eight of eleven returning clubs declined; only Arsenal, Everton and Aston Villa rose. Spurs and Liverpool were the sharpest, but the pattern was broad.

⚠️ The lower and lower-middle tier – the floor lifted, but gaps remain

At the lower end, the picture is more mixed than headline averages suggest.

Aston Villa edged up from 37,620 to 40,445 – the only established mid-tier club to grow this season. Brighton drew 33,948, down from 40,116 (-6,168), dropping from 7th to 9th in the league. London City Lionesses arrived in the WSL and settled at 33,775 – 10th of 12 by home total, averaging 3,070 across the season. Leicester City were almost unchanged at 30,535 against 31,094. West Ham remained the clear outlier at the bottom with 18,725, down from 20,217 – and still account for 8 of the 22 remaining sub-2,000 matches.

The encouraging counterpoint sits in the distribution rather than any individual club:

For the first time across these three seasons, no WSL match drew fewer than 1,000 fans, and the number of matches under 2,000 fell from 35 to 22. But the mechanism isn’t organic growth at the bottom – it’s structural. The two venues responsible for most of last season’s sub-1,000 matches are gone from the schedule: Walton Hall Park left with Everton’s move to Goodison; VBS Community Stadium left with Crystal Palace’s relegation. The floor lifted because the two venues defining it were removed – the same mechanism driving Everton’s rise.

The bottom of the league looked healthier than it has in years – even as Arsenal pulled further away at the very top.

🔄 The promoted-club effect: London City Lionesses

The newcomer slot has shifted league attendance differently in each of the last three seasons:

The variation isn’t about drawing power – it’s about venue access. Bristol City played all 11 fixtures at Ashton Gate Stadium, their men’s team’s ground (capacity ~27,000). Crystal Palace split between Selhurst Park (3 fixtures) and the smaller VBS Community Stadium (8). LCL play 10 of 11 at Copperjax Community Stadium, with one at The Den. Big-venue access shapes the newcomer total each year more than anything else.

Head-to-head against the same opponents makes the point concrete:

Same fixtures, different venues, different attendance.

LCL improved on Crystal Palace’s 2024-25 total by 14,203 – they’ve slotted into lower-middle rather than at the bottom. But they drew 42,937 fewer than Bristol City did two seasons ago, and that single gap accounts for 62% of the 69,320-fan shortfall between the 2025-26 and 2023-24 league totals. The other 38% sits with established clubs collectively drawing less than they did two seasons back.

The same structural mechanism running through the rest of this piece: venue moves, relegations, and which tier the newcomer plays in are doing more of the work than organic demand change.

The big-stadium dependency hasn’t gone away

Across the last three seasons, roughly 60% of WSL attendance has come from a small group of 10,000+ matches:

The count grew slightly this season, but average attendance within the 10k+ group fell from 31,410 (2023-24) to 25,854 (2025-26). More big-venue matches, each drawing fewer people on average – the tier is broadening at the base while compressing at the peak.

That peak compression is concentrated in one finding: the 40k+ tier has become an Arsenal-only category.

Every 50k+ match across all three seasons has been Arsenal at the Emirates. The “mega-event peaks” weren’t a league-wide phenomenon that thinned out – they were always concentrated at Arsenal, and the tier is now exclusively Arsenal’s.

What grew in its place is the 20-40k mid-tier. Across the three seasons, that band went from 5 matches (14.5% of attendance) to 9 (28.6%) to 10 (33.9%). So while the 40k+ tier contracted, the 20-40k showcase band roughly doubled in share. Clubs are still unlocking bigger venues for marquee fixtures – they’re just not filling 40k+ stadiums.

The question for 2026-27 isn’t whether the league can rebuild the 40k+ layer – Arsenal already operates there, and is growing within it. The question is whether non-Arsenal clubs return to it. Chelsea, Man Utd, Man City and Liverpool all have the venue capacity; none has cracked 40k since 2023-24.

📌 Closing thoughts – raise the floor, not just the ceiling

Last season’s piece closed with a line about the WSL’s next step being to raise the floor, not just the ceiling. A year on, that argument has only sharpened.

Arsenal’s ceiling is doing fine. They continue to set a new bar for what a women’s football matchday can look like in England, and the league as a whole still produced 21 fixtures at 10,000+ this season. There were no sub-1,000 attendances anywhere for the first time – which says something genuinely positive about the floor too.

But the ceiling-as-a-tier has narrowed and the middle is fragile. The 40k+ category is now an Arsenal monopoly: Manchester United and Manchester City both cracked it in 2023-24, neither has since. Five established clubs declined by significant margins (10%+ year-on-year): Tottenham, Liverpool, Manchester United, Brighton and Manchester City. Non-Arsenal attendance has fallen in each of the last two seasons – from 642,315 in 2023-24 to 531,095 this season, a 17% drop while Arsenal grew. The league’s reliance on a small number of big-stadium fixtures – still around 60% of total attendance – hasn’t budged.

The 2025-26 numbers don’t show a league running out of momentum. They show a league whose growth has become unevenly distributed – with Arsenal now accounting for 41% of all WSL attendance, up from 34% two seasons ago.

The next step is the same as last year’s, only more urgent: build out the regular matchday base across more clubs, so that recovery in the headline total reflects a recovery across the whole league – not just at the Emirates.

The 2025-26 WSL campaign closed on Saturday 16 May. 14 goals across the five fixtures (2.33 per game, below the a season average of 3.03 ). It was a final day of trophy lifts, farewells, club records, and play-off ramifications.

The Big Stories – (Final Matchday)

1. Manchester City crowned WSL champions – first title in 10 years

Andrée Jeglertz’s side rounded off their title-winning campaign with a 4–1 win at West Ham. Jade Rose grabbed her first WSL goal for City – a fitting final-day note in what has been an incredible debut season. Laura Coombs rounded off the scoring in her final WSL match before retirement.

The victory took City to 55 points, equalling their best-ever WSL points haul, also achieved in 2020/21 and 2023/24 – though this time, it was enough to claim the title. Eighteen wins from 22, a first WSL title since 2016, and a 100% home record across the season. Champions by every measure that mattered.

2. Shaw’s third Golden Boot in a row + entry into the 100-club

Shaw’s final-day brace took her to 21 goals for the season – her third 20+ goal WSL campaign – and sealed a record third consecutive Golden Boot. She also joined an illustrious group of Vivianne Miedema, Beth Mead, Beth England, Fran Kirby and Nikita Parris in reaching 100 WSL goal contributions.

3. Sam Kerr’s perfect farewell – record-equalling goal in 1-0 win

Sam Kerr bid the perfect farewell to Chelsea with a stunning winner against Manchester United in her final game for the club. Kerr departs this summer as Chelsea’s all-time leading WSL goalscorer and signed off with her 116th goal in all competitions – drawing level with Fran Kirby’s all-time club record.

4. Arsenal pip Chelsea to second with 3-1 win at Anfield – direct UWCL qualification secured

Renée Slegers’ side rounded off their campaign with a 3–1 win at Anfield, with Alessia Russo scoring twice to take her WSL tally to 13 goals and her all-competitions total to 24 for the season. Mariona Caldentey also found the net as Arsenal did the job they needed to do on the final day.

The result secured second place and direct qualification for next season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League league phase. Chelsea, despite beating Manchester United, were pushed down to third and will now have to go through UWCL qualifying – territory they have not had to navigate for six years.

5. Tottenham set a new club WSL points record

A 2–1 win away at FA Cup finalists Brighton showcased plenty of what Martin Ho has brought to north London. Spurs finished with a club-record 36 points and matched their best-ever WSL finish of fifth place.

6. Leicester suffer an 11th consecutive defeat heading into a Charlton play-off

Leicester looked set to end the regular season with a much-needed point at Goodison Park, only for Maz Pacheco to strike in the 96th minute and seal a 1–0 Everton win. It condemned the Foxes to an 11th straight WSL defeat, leaving them with the league’s worst form heading into their one-off play-off against Charlton for a place in next season’s top flight.

Other numbers worth sharing

• Hannah Hampton wins the Golden Glove: Chelsea’s Hannah Hampton claimed the WSL Golden Glove with eight clean sheets, sealing the award after Chelsea’s 1–0 final-day win over Manchester United. Ayaka Yamashita and Phallon Tullis-Joyce finished one behind on seven.

• Kerstin Casparij – elite defender output: Casparij finished the campaign joint-top of the WSL assists chart, level on seven with Aston Villa’s Lynn Wilms. With three goals and seven assists, she also became only the third defender in WSL history to register ten goal contributions in a single league season, alongside Katie McCabe and Ona Batlle.

• Final-day farewells: Included Chelsea’s Sam Kerr, plus a Stamford Bridge farewell for retiring captain Millie Bright; Arsenal’s Beth Mead, Katie McCabe, Victoria Pelova and Laia Codina; Spurs’ Bethany England; Manchester City’s retiring Laura Coombs; West Ham’s Katrina Gorry; and Liverpool’s Gemma Bonner and Gemma Evans.

A Quick Season-Wrap Retrospection

Back in December, after Matchweek 11, our mid-season review put concrete probabilities on each of the season’s defining battles. Most of those calls landed cleanly. One missed badly. Here’s a quick audit.

The Calls That Landed

1. The title – called, almost to the point

December projection: Manchester City 56 points, 91.8% title probability. May reality: Manchester City champions, 55 points, title sealed with a game to spare.

We were off by a single point on City’s final tally, at a stage of the season when the actual gap to Chelsea was still just six points and the title race looked far from settled. That was the model’s cleanest major call: not just the right champion, but almost the exact finishing line.

2. The UWCL race – right battles, wrong order

December projection: Chelsea 87.1% UWCL and favourites for 2nd; Arsenal 73.8% UWCL but flagged as vulnerable; Manchester United 37.8% UWCL and a real threat. May reality: Arsenal 2nd, Chelsea 3rd, Manchester United 4th and out of Europe.

The model had the right teams in the right conversation, but the wrong order. We flagged Arsenal as the most vulnerable of the front three despite their elite +13.1 xGD – and that now looks like the wrong read. Arsenal had more resilience than the projection gave them credit for.

3. Manchester United’s UWCL miss – foreseen

December projection: 62.2% probability of finishing outside the top three. May reality: 4th, no European football. The mid-season review identified United’s defensive collapse (13 goals conceded after 11 games versus 7 in the same period last year) and their wasteful finishing as the structural problems likely to cost them. Both held true.

4. Tottenham 5th – a clean structural call

December projection: Spurs 5th on 20 points, on course for “their best-ever WSL point haul” through “tactical discipline over flair”. May reality: Spurs 5th, 36 points, joint-best WSL finish, new club points record. Even with our mid-season warning that their negative xGD (–7.1) was a regression risk, Ho’s side held the line all the way.

The Call That Missed

5. Leicester’s collapse

December projection: Leicester only 12.0% play-off probability, well below Liverpool (44.1%) and West Ham (34.1%). May reality: Leicester 12th, eleven straight defeats. This is perhaps the model’s biggest miss.

The warning signs were all there in the mid-season review – 7.1 xG, the lowest in the league; 7.3 shots per game, the second-lowest; and –11.3 xGD – but we treated Leicester as a side with a points buffer rather than one capable of losing every match for five months.

Looking back, the single-player dependency we flagged at Liverpool – Olson, with 62.5% of their goals at the time, turned out to be a Leicester problem too. Shannon O’Brien ended the season having scored 45% of Leicester’s 11 goals. When that level of concentration meets a very poor attack, the outcome becomes brutally difficult to avoid.

The Final xPts Table – Process vs Results, One Last Time

The final 12-team xPts table, after all 132 matches gives us a clean summary of the season:

The headline Arsenal supporters will hold onto – and City supporters will rightly dismiss as irrelevant – is this: Arsenal finish top of the expected-points table with 49.12 xPts, 3.05 ahead of City’s 46.07.

Two teams, two extremes. City were the most prolific attack in the league by some distance, with 57.63 xGF. Arsenal had the meanest defence by an even wider margin, allowing just 14.65 xGA – 10.51 fewer than the next-best side, Chelsea. Their overall underlying value was almost identical: +33.72 xGD for City versus +32.30 for Arsenal.

The decisive factor was conversion. City turned dominance into wins with brutal consistency, winning 18 of 22 matches. Arsenal, by contrast, dropped points in draws they may well look back on as where the title slipped away.

Nine of the twelve teams finished within one position of their xPts rank. Only Brighton (xPts 5th, actual 7th), Everton (xPts 10th, actual 8th) and Liverpool (xPts 8th, actual 11th) fell outside that band.

Liverpool’s three-place underperformance was the biggest gap anywhere in the table. Taylor’s side created more than their final position suggested, but three consecutive defeats to close the campaign hammered that gap home.

At the top, the gulf between Chelsea in 3rd (42.25 xPts) and 4th-placed Manchester United (33.88) was 8.37 xPts – the largest gap anywhere in the table. The automatic Champions League places were a class apart from the chasing pack, regardless of how tight the actual points totals ended up looking.

🌍 Weekend Landscape

The final round of the 2025–26 Women’s Super League is here, and every fixture kicks off simultaneously – all six matches at 13:00 BST on Saturday 16 May, all live on Sky Sports. The title is already settled, relegation is already settled, and the top-four picture is almost complete, but the final day still has enough to make it more than a ceremonial send-off.

This is trophy day for Manchester City. It is also Arsenal’s last test in the race for second, Chelsea’s last chance to apply pressure, a three-way Golden Glove shootout, a full-back-vs-full-back Playmaker race, and a weekend of goodbyes for some of the league’s most recognisable names.

What’s already decided

• Manchester City are champions. Their first WSL title in ten years was sealed on 6 May when Arsenal failed to beat Brighton. A domestic double still possible when they face Brighton in the FA Cup final at Wembley on 31 May.

• Manchester United are fourth. Seven points clear of Tottenham with one game left, the gap can’t be bridged.

• Leicester City are bottom, confirmed for the relegation play-off against Charlton Athletic, who finished third in WSL2.

• Top scorer: Khadija Shaw leads the Golden Boot race on 19 goals, seven clear of Aston Villa’s Kirsty Hanson. Barring something extraordinary, a third consecutive Golden Boot is hers – and that would be a WSL first.

What’s still live

• Second place in the WSL – Arsenal visit Liverpool on 48 points, with Chelsea two points behind on 46. A point at Anfield should be enough for Arsenal given their huge goal-difference advantage (+37 vs +23). Chelsea need to beat Manchester United and hope Liverpool beat Arsenal to have any chance of moving above them.

• Golden Glove – Hannah Hampton, Phallon Tullis-Joyce and Ayaka Yamashita all enter the final round on seven clean sheets. Stamford Bridge gives us the head-to-head subplot, but Yamashita can still influence the outcome from West Ham.

• Playmaker race – Kerstin Casparij and Lynn Wilms are level at the top of the WSL assists chart on seven. Two full-backs, two very different teams, one final match to settle the league’s creative crown.

Predictions snapshot

Our model has Arsenal as strong favourites at Anfield (72% win), with Manchester City similarly strong at West Ham (72%). Chelsea are clear favourites against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge (69%), and Everton are backed at home against bottom-placed Leicester (64%). London City Lionesses come into their final match as 58% home favourites against Aston Villa. The most evenly balanced fixture of the round is Brighton 48% – 24% draw – 28% Tottenham.

Match by Match Preview

Liverpool v Arsenal

Sat 16 May, 13:00 – Anfield | Sky Sports
Win probabilities: LIV 7% – 21% draw – 72% ARS

Liverpool sign off under Gareth Taylor with a campaign that started well below expectations but has clearly improved since the turn of the year. The final table may still reflect a side that has underperformed – 11th out of 12 – but their performances in the second half of the season have offered a more encouraging picture. Last weekend’s narrow 1-0 home defeat to Manchester City – decided by Rebecca Knaak’s 91st-minute header from an Alex Greenwood corner – will sting given how close they came to one of the season’s biggest scalps.

Arsenal arrive in control of their own second-place destiny. Stina Blackstenius’ 93rd-minute winner against Everton in midweek lifted them above Chelsea, and a single point at Anfield is enough to confirm a top-two finish. But when you look at the season as a whole, it is still a frustrating situation for Slegers: a Champions League semi-final exit at Lyon, a Brighton draw that handed City the title, and a campaign in which Arsenal have lost just one WSL game and still won’t lift the trophy.

Head-to-Head Analysis (WSL)

• Arsenal have dominated this fixture, winning nine of the last 10 WSL meetings. Liverpool’s only victory in that run came in October 2023.

• The reverse fixture in December finished Arsenal 2–1 Liverpool, with Arsenal winning the last four meetings in a row.

Beth Mead, one last time – Mead became the WSL’s youngest-ever Golden Boot winner with Sunderland in 2015 at the age of 20. She will go down as one of Arsenal’s best forwards and a club legend. Whether she starts or comes off the bench, every touch at Anfield will carry weight. Stina Blackstenius is also worth watching – her 93rd-minute Everton winner was another reminder of her decisive edge, and she has now scored four goals across her last five WSL appearances, despite playing only 146 minutes.

Chelsea v Manchester United

Sat 16 May, 13:00 – Stamford Bridge | Sky Sports
Win probabilities: CHE 69% – 19% draw – 12% MNU

Chelsea need a win and Arsenal to lose to overhaul the Gunners for second. Anything else and Sonia Bompastor’s side finish third – still a UWCL place, already confirmed after last weekend’s 3-1 win at Leicester, but a noticeable step down from the six consecutive titles era that has just ended.

Manchester United arrive with little riding on the result beyond pride. They were within minutes of losing at home to Brighton in their final home fixture before Lea Schuller’s stoppage-time equaliser rescued a 1-1 draw.

Head-to-Head Analysis (WSL)

• Chelsea have dominated this fixture, winning nine of the last 10 WSL meetings, with one draw and no Manchester United wins in the run.

• The reverse fixture in October finished Manchester United 1–1 Chelsea. Before that draw, Chelsea had won eight WSL meetings against United in a row.

🔎 Key stats to watch

Golden Glove pressure – Hampton and Tullis-Joyce both enter the final day on seven clean sheets, making Stamford Bridge the cleanest head-to-head subplot of the weekend. Ayaka Yamashita is also on seven for Manchester City, so the award is not solely decided here. A Chelsea or United clean sheet could still be matched from Chigwell, which gives this race a live scoreboard feel across two grounds.

West Ham United v Manchester City

Sat 16 May, 13:00 – Chigwell Construction Stadium | Sky Sports
Win probabilities: WHU 11% – 17% draw – 72% MCI

Manchester City visit Chigwell as champions for the first time since 2016. Andrée Jeglertz’s side absorbed last month’s Brighton shock and produced the response that mattered, with Rebecca Knaak’s stoppage-time header against Liverpool keeping the title firmly in their hands. Arsenal’s failure to beat Brighton four days later finished the job. The challenge now is to sign off the league season strongly, with a potential domestic double still to come.

West Ham have already secured their WSL status for next season, with Leicester facing the relegation play-off. Rita Guarino’s side are ending a turbulent campaign in much better shape, losing just once in their last five WSL games, including winning two on the bounce. If they can get a result against the champions, it would be a grand way to finish the season.

Head-to-Head Analysis (WSL)

• Manchester City have utterly dominated this fixture, winning eight of the last 10 WSL meetings against West Ham (D1, L1). The Hammers’ only victory in that run was a 2-0 home win in October 2021.

• The reverse fixture in November finished Manchester City 1–0 West Ham at the Joie Stadium. City have lost just once in the last nine meetings between the sides.

🔎 Key player to watch

Khadija Shaw, third Golden Boot in sight – Shaw’s 19 WSL goals this season already give her a seven-goal cushion over second-placed Kirsty Hanson. Add the FWA Women’s Footballer of the Year award she collected last week – her second in three years – and the late brace that sent City past Chelsea and into the FA Cup final, and a title-winning campaign is beginning to look like a defining individual season.

London City Lionesses v Aston Villa

Sat 16 May, 13:00 – Copperjax Community Stadium | Sky Sports
Win probabilities: LCL 58% – 25% draw – 17% AVL

London City Lionesses close out their first WSL season at home, and Eder Maestre’s side have plenty to be proud of. Gained promotion last summer, they have not only retained their top-flight status but did that convincingly with at least a 7th place guaranteed. They head into this one off the back of a 2-1 defeat at Brisbane Road, where Alanna Kennedy’s late goal was not quite enough to rescue something on the day.

Aston Villa arrive in a very different situation. They have struggled across the run-in: a 4-3 defeat at Chelsea in a chaotic seven-goal classic, a 1-1 draw at home to West Ham, and a 3-0 home defeat to Arsenal in a rearranged fixture on 9 May. A patchy season has left them ninth, with eighth the highest they can still finish – and even that depends on results going their way.

Head-to-Head Analysis (WSL)

• They have only met once in the WSL. London City Lionesses won 3–1 in November, a result that signalled their intent in their debut top-flight season.

🔎 Key player to watch

Lynn Wilms, one assist from separation – Wilms enters the final day level with Casparij on seven assists. Her delivery from left-back has been one of Villa’s biggest weapons, particularly when paired with Hanson’s movement in the box. If Villa do hurt London City, that Wilms-to-Hanson channel is the obvious route.

Everton v Leicester City

Sat 16 May, 13:00 – Goodison Park | Sky Sports
Win probabilities: EVE 64% – 22% draw – 14% LEI

Everton sign off a difficult campaign at Goodison Park. Scott Phelan took over as interim head coach from Brian Sørensen in early February, won his first three matches in charge, but has struggled since: three consecutive defeats to Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea, followed by Wednesday’s 1-0 loss to Arsenal. Eighth is still the position they will want to protect on the final day, but even a win would only take them to 23 points – one fewer than the 24 they accumulated last season.

Leicester arrive after an even more difficult campaign. They are bottom of the table and already confirmed for the relegation play-off against Charlton later this month. Whatever happens at Goodison, the larger fixture is what comes next – a play-off against a Charlton side who finished third in WSL2 and will fancy their chances against a Leicester team carrying very little forward momentum.

Head-to-Head Analysis (WSL)

• These sides have met nine times in the WSL, with Everton winning four, Leicester three, and two draws. The reverse fixture in October finished 1-1.

• Both sides have had spells of dominance: Leicester won three meetings in a row across 2023 and 2024, before Everton hit back with a 4-1 win in February 2025.

Brighton v Tottenham Hotspur

Sat 16 May, 13:00 – American Express Stadium | Sky Sports
Win probabilities: BRI 48% – 24% draw – 28% TOT

Brighton sign off at the Amex in fine style. Dario Vidosic’s side have produced one of the most striking end-of-season runs in the league: a 3-2 home win over Manchester City that delayed the title party, an FA Cup quarter-final victory away at Arsenal, a 1-1 draw at Manchester United and an FA Cup semi-final comeback against Liverpool that has set up a Wembley final against City on 31 May. It is hard to imagine a stronger finish to the campaign.

Tottenham arrive at the Amex with their own reasons to reflect positively. Fifth place is already guaranteed – six places higher than last season’s 11th-place finish – and Martin Ho’s side have already recorded their highest WSL points tally in a single campaign. From here, anything they take on the final day would feel like a bonus.

Head-to-Head Analysis (WSL)

• Tottenham have the better of this fixture historically, winning four of the last 10 WSL meetings against Brighton, with Brighton winning three and three drawn.

• The reverse fixture in October finished Tottenham 1-0 Brighton at the BetWright Stadium, but Brighton won the previous meeting 1-0 in March 2025.

🔎 Key player to watch

Bethany England, one final Spurs chapter – England’s final Tottenham appearance adds emotional weight to what would otherwise be a pure mid-table closer. Every goal from here strengthens her place as one of the WSL’s enduring elite finishers.

The Big Stories

The win took Spurs to 33 points – their highest-ever WSL tally, beating their 32-point 2021/22 record with one game left.

4. Manchester United’s UWCL hopes all but dead

Brighton continued their stunning recent run – an FA Cup win over Arsenal, a league win over Manchester City, and now a near-miss at Manchester United – before Lea Schüller’s 90+4 equaliser, her first WSL goal since joining from Bayern in January, rescued a point for United. The result leaves United one point behind third-placed Arsenal, who still have three games in hand. Chelsea’s top-three finish is already confirmed, so if Arsenal beat Brighton in midweek, United’s Champions League hopes will be mathematically over.

5. West Ham 2-0 win at Villa Park — Villa’s barren run continues

Despite dominating proceedings, Villa couldn’t find a breakthrough. Riko Ueki scored in the 86th minute, then turned provider for substitute Piubel six minutes later to secure West Ham’s second away win on the bounce. Villa have now won just one of their last eight league games.

6. Birmingham and Crystal Palace promoted; Leicester face play-off for survival

WSL2’s final day on Saturday delivered both automatic promotion spots. Birmingham City won the title with a 2-0 win at Charlton, completing a return to the top flight after four years away. Crystal Palace secured the second automatic spot with a 6-1 thrashing of Portsmouth at Selhurst Park – an immediate bounce-back after their 2024/25 relegation. Birmingham and Palace finished level on 44 points, with Birmingham taking the title on goal difference. Charlton finished third and now face a play-off against Leicester City – bottom of the WSL – for the final spot in next season’s expanded 14-team WSL.

That last number is the most damning: in their final home game of the season, United simply did not create a single clear-cut opportunity across 90 minutes.

• Brighton were the more dangerous side despite seeing less of the ball. Their 1.82 xG from just 6 shots shows efficiency – comfortably above their 1.30 season average – and they created 2 big chances compared to United’s none. The only oddity was just 1 shot on target from those 6 attempts, with Cankovic’s goal the only one that beat Tullis-Joyce.

Implications

• Manchester United stay 4th on 40 points – six behind Chelsea (46) and one behind Arsenal (41), who still have three games in hand. UWCL qualification via a top-three finish is now effectively out of United’s hands: they have one match left, away at Chelsea, and even a win there would only take them to 43 – still needing Arsenal to drop points in all three remaining fixtures. This is now one win in their last five WSL matches for United, a very sad end to a season that started very brightly.

• Brighton move to 25 points and climb above London City Lionesses (24) into 6th. Their unbeaten run now stands at five matches – W3 D2 – including wins over Manchester City and Arsenal (FA Cup). An FA Cup semi-final against Liverpool on 10 May now looms. Vidošić’s side are peaking at exactly the right time.

Retrospection

• Our preview called this the tightest fixture of the matchweek, and the xG split tells you Brighton were full value for at least a point – arguably all three. The model expected a close game; the result agreed with the model, however, the underlying numbers showed Brighton deserved more.

Manchester City 1–0 Liverpool

Key Stats

• City were well below their usual output. 1.39 xG from 14 shots is perfectly respectable for most sides, but against season averages of 2.57 xG and 18.4 shots, this was comfortably their quietest attacking display in weeks. Touches in the opposition box (26 vs 40.4 average) and chances created (11 vs 13.1) tell the same story – Liverpool’s shape made City work for every half-chance.

• Liverpool deserve enormous credit. Their 1.39 xG matched City’s exactly – a remarkable output for a side averaging 0.96 xG per match this season. They created 2 big chances (above their 1.52 average) and had 9 shots (above their 8.4 average), all while conceding 58% possession to the league leaders. The only weakness: just 1 shot on target from those 9 attempts, against a season average of 2.6.

Implications

• Manchester City move to 52 points from 21 matches – six clear of Chelsea (46) and eleven ahead of Arsenal (41), though Arsenal have four games in hand. Only a win in their final fixture will guarantee their first WSL title since 2016. A draw would take City to 53, but Arsenal can also reach 53 if they win their remaining four matches – and with City's goal difference advantage currently just +7 over Arsenal (+40 vs +33), even that cushion is not safe across four games.

• Liverpool slip to 11th on 17 points from 21 matches – overtaken by West Ham (19) after the Hammers’ win this weekend. It is a desperately disappointing end to a season that promised more after their mid-season revival. They face Brighton in the FA Cup semi-final on 10 May, which is now by far their most important remaining fixture.

Retrospection

• Our model gave City a 78% win probability, and the result – a 1–0 win via Knaak’s 90+1’ header – landed on the right side of the prediction, however, the xG split – 1.39 vs 1.39 – tells you this was not a comfortable afternoon for City. Liverpool matched them chance-for-chance and will wonder how they left Manchester with nothing.

Tottenham Hotspur 2–1 London City Lionesses

Key Stats

• Spurs were dominant across the full 90 minutes, and the data backs it up. 2.07 xG from 15 shots – well above their 1.45 season average – with 3 big chances created (against a 1.95 average) and 7 shots on target from those 15 attempts, more than their usual 4.3. Touches in the opposition box hit 29, comfortably above their 23.3 norm, and chances created (10) were also above average (9.4). Both goals came inside the first half-hour – Gaupset on 13’ and Holdt on 28’ – but Spurs did not take their foot off the gas after the break.

• London City Lionesses were not outclassed. Their 1.26 xG from 12 shots was close to their 1.30 season average, and they actually put 8 shots on target – double their 4.0 average. They created 10 chances (above their 8.0 norm) and had 49% possession, essentially matching Spurs for territory. The key difference was big chances: just 1 compared to Spurs’ 3. Set-piece xG was notably high – 0.32, accounting for 25% of their total output – and Kennedy’s 90th-minute header from Cascarino’s delivery was exactly that route bearing fruit, too late.

Implications

• Tottenham snap a five-match winless run (D1 L4) and move to 33 points, setting a new club record for points in a single WSL campaign – surpassing the 32 they managed in 2021/22, with one match still to play. They consolidate 5th place, now 7 points behind Man Utd (40) and 8 clear of Brighton (25) in 6th. Their season has been defined by heavy defeats against the top two – 5–2 at both City and Arsenal – sandwiched between solid results against the rest.

• London City Lionesses stay on 24 points from 21 matches, dropping to 7th after Brighton’s draw moved them to 25 in 6th. In their debut WSL season, 24 points with one match remaining is a creditable return – but this loss, with Kennedy’s consolation arriving on 90 minutes after a competitive display, will sting. They have one game left to finish the campaign on a high.

• Our model had this as finely balanced – 42% Spurs, 33% LCL, 25% draw – with Spurs having a slight edge. A commanding 2–0 lead at halftime was certainly not on the model’s radar given how we flagged Spurs’ inability to convert dominance into goals as a key weakness; this time they were clinical. Spurs managed the game far better than recent weeks suggested they could.

Leicester City 1–3 Chelsea

• Chelsea were very dominant. 2.53 xG from 24 shots, 8 on target, 54 touches in the opposition box – all comfortably above their season averages of 2.13, 18.0, 6.0, and 39.3 respectively. They created 18 chances (against a 13.0 average) and 3 big chances, and the game was effectively over by the 33rd minute with James’s second.

• Leicester managed 0.69 xG from just 5 shots – marginally above their 0.65 season average, which tells you everything about the scale of the gap. They had only 29% possession and 4 touches in the opposition box, against a season average of 12.3. O’Brien’s 42nd-minute goal – her and Leicester’s bright spot – came from one of just 2 big chances.

Implications

• Chelsea move to 46 points from 21 matches, sealing UWCL qualification for next season with one game still to play. The title is out of reach – even if City lose their final match, Chelsea’s maximum of 49 points from their remaining fixture cannot overhaul City’s 52. Their focus now turns to finishing the season strongly against Man Utd on the final day. Sam Kerr’s 13th-minute opener made her Chelsea’s all-time leading WSL scorer outright on 64 goals, surpassing Fran Kirby.

• Leicester stay bottom on 9 points from 21 matches with one game remaining. They are confirmed 12th and will face the third-placed WSL 2 side in a relegation play-off. Their last 5 WSL results read: L (Chelsea 3–1), L (Arsenal 7–0), L (LCL 5–1), L (Brighton 1–0), L (Aston Villa 2–1) – five consecutive defeats, 18 goals conceded, 3 scored. Aston Villa 0–2 West Ham United

Key Stats

• Villa dominated territory and created the better chances – but could not finish any of them. 1.47 xG from 11 shots, 5 on target, and 5 big chances created (more than double their 2.30 season average) all point to a side that should have won this match comfortably. Possession was 63% – well above their 48.0% norm – and they had 17 touches in the opposition box. Set-piece xG was 0.24 (16% of total), modest by their standards – but surprisingly none could find the net for a side with the WSL’s most efficient set-piece attack.

• West Ham were clinical to an almost absurd degree. 0.85 xG from just 4 shots – the fewest of any team in MW21 – and only 9 touches in the opposition box, barely half their 16.6 season average. They created 2 big chances from 3 total chances created and scored both late goals from them. Zero set-piece xG means every bit of their threat came from open play, and both goals arrived through substitute interventions: Ueki (86’, assist Siren) and Piubel (90+2’, assist Ueki).

Implications

• Aston Villa stay 9th on 20 points from 20 matches, level with Everton (20) above them on games played. Their home form has been dire – this extends their run without a home league win to nearly four months, since the 2–1 over Brighton on 11 January. With two matches remaining, they are safe from the play-off but have little else to play for beyond finishing the season on a high.

• West Ham move to 19 points from 21 matches, climbing to 10th and pulling 2 points clear of Liverpool (17) in 11th. That is back-to-back away wins – at Liverpool last weekend and now at Villa Park – after a run of five without a victory. With one match left, Guarino’s side have given themselves a strong platform heading into next season.

• Our model gave Villa a 57% win probability and flagged the set-piece battle as the key battleground. Neither prediction quite landed. Villa’s set-piece threat was muted (0.26 xG, 17% share), and the set-piece vulnerability we highlighted for both sides did not decide the game – open play did. The model expected Villa to win; the xG (1.53 to 0.85) says they should have. But 5 big chances and 0 goals is the kind of finishing collapse that no model can account for.

WSL 2025-26 xPts Table – MW21: Chelsea leapfrog Arsenal, Brighton’s quiet surge continues

The headline xPts story this week mirrors the actual table: Chelsea overtake Arsenal into 2nd in expected points. Chelsea jumped from 38.84 to 41.30 xPts – the biggest gain of any side (+2.46) – on the back of their 2.53 xG performance at Leicester. Arsenal, who didn’t play due to their UWCL semi-final commitments, remain on 39.60. The gap is now 1.70 xPts in Chelsea’s favour, though Arsenal still have three games in hand.

Manchester City added +1.37 to reach 44.07 xPts at the top, maintaining a 2.77 cushion over Chelsea. Their cumulative xGF of 54.05 and xGD of +31.07 remain in a class of their own.

Brighton’s quiet surge continues. They added +2.15 to reach 29.35 xPts – the second-biggest gain of the matchweek – despite only drawing 1–1 at Manchester United.

Aston Villa gained +1.74 xPts despite losing 0–2 to West Ham. Villa’s 1.47 xG to West Ham’s 0.96 and 5 big chances to 2 meant the model thought they deserved all three points. West Ham’s actual points (19) now sit marginally above their xPts (18.62), but this was a win earned through clinical finishing rather than sustained dominance.

At the bottom, Leicester added just +0.39 to 14.60 xPts. The gap to 11th-placed West Ham is now 4.02 expected points, up from 3.40 a week ago. Leicester’s cumulative xGF of 13.68 remains by far the lowest in the division, and their xGA of 40.86 is comfortably the worst.

🌍 Weekend Landscape

Matchweek 21 arrives with the WSL title race wider open than it looked seven days ago – and with Leicester City confirmed bottom, their WSL future now hanging on a relegation play-off.

There are five fixtures rather than the usual six for the second consecutive matchweek, with Arsenal v Everton rescheduled to Wednesday 13 May to accommodate Arsenal’s UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final second leg away at Lyon on Saturday.

At St Helens’ BrewDog Stadium, West Ham snatched three crucial survival points at Liverpool through a 6th-minute Cornelia Kapocs own goal. Liverpool dominated possession but lacked quality in the final action, recording zero big chances all game. The Reds’ five-match unbeaten run ends, while Rita Guarino’s Hammers boost their survival hopes meaningfully.

They were above their season averages for shots, chances created and territory – but couldn’t find a way past Phallon Tullis-Joyce. The standout stat was their shot volume: 22 shots, their second-most in a single match this season after the 27 they registered against Villa.

• Manchester United looked drained again, posting numbers well below their season averages across the board. The standout – and an unflattering one – is that their 0.46 xG was almost identical to the 0.46 they posted in the Manchester derby a month ago. The international break was supposed to be a reset; the attacking output suggests it wasn’t.

Implications

• Tottenham are now 30 points, but remain in 5th. They are six matches without a win in all competitions, but a first clean sheet since January 18 win over Leicester will offer Ho something to build on.

• Manchester United climb to 3rd on 39 points – but the gap to Chelsea widens to four, and Arsenal sit just one point behind with three games in hand. United now look increasingly likely to slip out of the UWCL qualification places.

Everton 1–4 Chelsea

Implications

• Chelsea remain 2nd on 43 points, four clear of Manchester United and five ahead of Arsenal, who has three games in hand. One more win seals UWCL qualification.

• Everton stay 8th on 20 points – safely clear of relegation. The four-game winning streak that briefly carried them from 11th to 6th now feels like a long time ago: this is now their third consecutive defeat in the WSL.

London City Lionesses 5–1 Leicester City

• LCL produced one of the most complete attacking performances of the matchweek: 2.85 xG from 19 shots – well above their season averages of 1.30 xG and 10.8 shots – with 10 shots on target, more than 2.5 times their 3.9 average, and 7 big chances versus their 2.25 norm. After taking just 2 points from their previous five matches, this was exactly the response Maestre needed.

• Leicester’s 0.61 xG was almost exactly in line with their 0.68 season average – but they managed just 3 shots, 8 touches in the opposition box, below their 13.2 average, and 1 chance created, well below their 4.7 norm. Their cumulative WSL attacking numbers remain the lowest in the division by a wide margin.

Implications

• London City Lionesses remain 7th on 24 points, level with Brighton but behind on goal difference. This was a huge boost for Maestre, whose side had not really got going since the managerial change.

• Leicester remain bottom on 9 points, with the gap to West Ham now 7 points. They still have three matches left, but the margin for error is virtually gone. Mathematically still alive, but practically gone.

Liverpool 0–1 West Ham United

• Liverpool were the dominant side in terms of possession and territory, and their core attacking numbers were respectable: shots, 11; shots on target, 3; chances created, 9 – all above their season averages. But in the final action, they were found wanting, creating no clear-cut chances across the full 90 minutes.

• West Ham’s attacking metrics were not great – in fact, they were below their already modest averages in most areas. But they were defensively disciplined, which is commendable for a side that has conceded 41 goals this season. They were also ruthless when it mattered, converting the set-piece opportunity that ultimately decided the game.

Implications

• Liverpool stay 10th on 17 points – still eight clear of the relegation place. This will feel like a missed opportunity, especially with their final two matches coming against the two sides still fighting for the title.

• West Ham move to 16 points but remain 11th – just one point behind Liverpool, with two matches left for both. Although survival is not mathematically secured, they will feel this win is more than enough to keep them in the WSL next season.

• Our preview made Liverpool modest favourites at 51% and gave West Ham only a 16% chance. This was the biggest upset of the round alongside Brighton’s win. We did preview that it was going to be a “tight, nervy game”, with both attacks flagged as among the lowest-output in the WSL – and that played out almost exactly as expected.

Expected Points – MW20: Chelsea Reclaim Second, City Extend Their Underlying Lead, Leicester Drift Further Adrift

The headline xPts story this week mirrors the actual table: Chelsea overtake Arsenal into 2nd place in expected points. Chelsea jumped from 36.36 to 38.84 xPts – the biggest gain of any side – on the back of their 3.10 xG performance at Goodison. Arsenal, who didn’t play, remain on 36.64. They do, however, still have three games in hand.

The other big story is what didn’t happen: Manchester City’s xPts lead actually grew despite losing. They moved from 41.02 to 42.70 xPts. Their cumulative xGF of 52.66 and xGD of +31.07 remain comfortably the best in the division.

Brighton’s defeat of City makes for an interesting xPts story: they took 3 actual points, but their xGD turned negative, moving from +0.24 to −0.12. Their 1.86 xG was good, but conceding 2.36 to City means the win, in underlying terms, was earned through clinical finishing rather than territorial control. They stay 5th in xPts.

Liverpool’s xPts continue to climb despite defeat, moving from 21.74 to 23.11. They extend their gap above Aston Villa, who sit 8th in the expected table on 21.24, even as the actual-table gap shrinks. Their underlying numbers remain closer to mid-table than the relegation picture painted by the actual table.

At the bottom, Leicester sit on 14.18 xPts, 3.43 behind West Ham – a gap that was 2.38 a week ago. Leicester’s cumulative xGF of 12.89 remains by far the lowest in the division, and the gap to safety is widening, not closing.

🌍 Weekend Landscape

Matchweek 20 opens the final run-in of the 2025–26 campaign as the WSL returns from a near-month-long international break, and it could be the weekend that leaves Manchester City on the brink of the title.

A seventh consecutive title for Chelsea is almost certainly gone now. City sit nine points clear of Sonia Bompastor’s side. With three to play, a City win at Brighton on Saturday would make Arsenal the only team in the division still mathematically able to catch them.

The break has been a genuine reset. With no club game since the 29–30 March round, rhythm, fitness and international workload will all feed into how the weekend plays out.

There are five fixtures rather than the usual six, with Arsenal v Aston Villa rescheduled to Wednesday 7 May to accommodate Arsenal’s UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final against Lyon, leaving the Gunners out of the weekend’s action.

Saturday’s programme opens with Brighton hosting Manchester City at Broadfield – the only fixture of the day.

Matchweek 19 was supposed to be the centrepiece of the WSL calendar. Three top-flight derbies — Arsenal vs Tottenham, Manchester United vs Manchester City, Everton vs Liverpool — all staged on the same Saturday, deliberately timed to capitalise on the men’s international break. No Premier League competition. No scheduling clashes. Maximum visibility.

The total across all six fixtures: 83,639.

That’s not a disaster in isolation. But compared to the equivalent fixtures last season, it represents a 21% decline — and every single big-venue derby dropped.

The Numbers

Like-for-like total (5 comparable fixtures): 82,321 vs 104,241 — down 21,920.

*London City Lionesses replaced Crystal Palace this season. For reference, West Ham vs Crystal Palace at Chigwell drew 1,292 in December 2024 — again, broadly flat.

What stands out

The North London Derby lost nearly 11,000 fans. Arsenal vs Tottenham at the Emirates drew 46,123 — a strong crowd by any measure, but down from 56,784 for the same fixture last season. That’s a drop of more than 10,600 for the WSL’s marquee rivalry, and part of a broader pattern this season.

Beyond the Chelsea match which pulled in 56,537, Arsenal’s Emirates attendances have settled into a noticeably lower range. Only two of their nine home fixtures have cleared 40,000, and the majority have drawn between 24,000 and 39,000. Arsenal remain head and shoulders above the rest of the WSL — their figures dwarf the next-best club by a factor of nearly two. The demand is still there, but the peaks are flattening.

The Merseyside derby was nearly halved. Everton vs Liverpool at Goodison drew just 5,292 — down 46% from 9,823 at Goodison in November 2024. This is the fixture that should have been the emotional centrepiece of derby weekend: Liverpool chasing their first WSL Merseyside derby win since 2019, genuine relegation stakes for the Reds, Everton’s first permanent season at Goodison. Instead, it pulled fewer fans than several non-derby fixtures earlier in the season. Scheduling it alongside the Manchester derby and the NLD — both kicking off within hours — meant the Merseyside clash ranked third in interest on its own Saturday.

Old Trafford drew 25k for a title-defining match. Man City arrived eight points clear at the top. United were fighting for Champions League qualification between the legs of their quarter-final against Bayern Munich. The 24,983 attendance was one of United’s biggest WSL crowds — but still a fifth below the 31,465 that watched the same fixture last season. For a match with that much at stake, in that venue, during a men’s break, 25k feels like it should have been higher.

The bottom end was predictable — and predictably low. Chelsea at Kingsmeadow (3,470), West Ham at Chigwell (1,318), and Leicester at the King Power (2,453) all came in within their normal seasonal ranges. These are infrastructure-constrained clubs where attendance is shaped more by venue than by fixture. The only year-on-year riser was Leicester vs Brighton — up 34%, but from a base of 1,832 to 2,453. Low-base arithmetic.

The concentration problem, again

Strip out the Emirates and the aggregate drops to 37,516 across five fixtures — an average of 7,503. Strip out Old Trafford as well and the remaining four games averaged 3,133.

This has been the defining structural pattern of the WSL’s attendance story all season. Arsenal’s Emirates fixtures account for roughly 45% of all league attendance. The next tier — Old Trafford, Stamford Bridge, Goodison, Anfield — provides occasional five-figure crowds. Everything else sits in the 1,000–4,000 band.

Derby weekend didn’t change that distribution. It reinforced it.

Did the scheduling strategy work?

The logic behind cramming derbies into the men’s international break is straightforward: with no Premier League football, the WSL owns the live schedule. Broadcasters get marquee content. Fans have no competing option. It’s the same thinking behind the September opening weekend, which has delivered strong Round 1 numbers.

But this weekend exposed the limits of that approach. Three simultaneous top-flight derbies didn’t amplify each other — they competed for attention. Media bandwidth was stretched across venues. The Merseyside derby, which in any normal weekend would have been the headline fixture, was buried. Pre-match coverage was dominated by the title implications of Man City’s trip to Old Trafford and the Russo narrative at the Emirates.

The aggregate number of ~84k is fine. But the like-for-like decline of 21% suggests the scheduling window alone isn’t enough to counteract a broader cooling trend. WSL attendances dipped roughly 10% in 2024-25 versus the prior year. This season’s equivalent fixtures are dropping again.

The wider trend

It’s worth being precise about what this does and doesn’t mean. The WSL is not in crisis. A 46,000-strong crowd at the Emirates, a near-25,000 turnout at Old Trafford, and a seven-goal thriller at Kingsmeadow are all markers of a league with genuine commercial appeal. The football itself was outstanding — Russo’s hat-trick, Miedema’s double, Holland’s derby-winning performance for Liverpool, Chelsea’s dramatic comeback.

But the attendance trajectory is no longer pointing upwards. Like-for-like fixture comparisons are declining for a second consecutive season. The gap between the top-end spectacle and the everyday WSL product remains vast.

Derby weekend was designed to be the answer to that. The numbers suggest it’s not enough.

Overview

Matchweek 19 produced 25 goals across six fixtures — an average of 4.17 per game — making it the highest-scoring round of the season so far. It was a weekend defined by derbies: three of the six matches were local rivalries, each delivering its share of drama and talking points.

The standout moment came at the Emirates, where Alessia Russo scored a first-half hat-trick — two goals inside the opening seven minutes and a third on 27 — as Arsenal dismantled Tottenham 5–2 in front of 46,123 fans. It was Russo’s first hat-trick for the club, rounding off a week in which she had also scored in the 3–1 Champions League quarter-final first-leg win over Chelsea. Renée Slegers’ side have now recorded 11 consecutive victories in all competitions and sit on 38 points with two games in hand.

At Old Trafford, Manchester City moved a step closer to their first WSL title in a decade with a 3–0 win over Manchester United, thanks to Vivianne Miedema’s quickfire double and a second-half strike from Kerstin Casparij. City now need just two wins from their remaining three matches to seal the championship.

Chelsea survived a breathless seven-goal thriller at Kingsmeadow, edging Aston Villa 4–3 thanks to Sjoeke Nüsken’s strike in the 82nd minute. Five goals flew in between the 20th and 35th minutes, as Chelsea overturned an early Villa lead to go 3–1 up before Kirsty Hanson’s quickfire double brought the visitors level. Nüsken settled it late to secure the win, lifting Chelsea to second on 40 points ahead of a pivotal week — they host Arsenal in the UWCL quarter-final second leg on Wednesday, trailing 1–3.

The Merseyside derby at Goodison Park saw Liverpool race into a 3–0 half-time lead through Ceri Holland’s penalty, a Martina Fernández own goal, and a magnificent curling strike from Holland. Everton came out transformed after the break — Aurora Galli’s deflected free-kick pulled one back, Grace Fisk’s needless second yellow reduced Liverpool to ten, and Zara Kramžar’s 91st-minute goal set up a frantic finale — but Liverpool clung on for their first away WSL win of the season. Gareth Taylor’s side have now taken 7 points from their last three league matches.

West Ham and London City Lionesses played out a 1–1 draw at the Chigwell Construction Stadium. Jana Fernández put the visitors ahead on the counterattack before Oona Siren rescued a point for the Hammers — her first goal for West Ham United in her 51st appearance.

At the King Power Stadium, Kiko Seike’s 48th-minute tap-in — created by a Fran Kirby through ball to Rosa Kafaji — condemned Leicester to a seventh consecutive defeat. The Foxes failed to register a single shot on target and remain rooted to the bottom of the table on nine points.

Everton 2–3 Liverpool

• Liverpool’s first half was ruthlessly efficient: 1.22 xG from 7 shots, 3 on target and 3 goals — job done. Over the full match, they generated 1.34 xG, comfortably above their season average of 0.94. They also exceeded their usual attacking output with five shots on target (vs 2.6) and 26 touches in the opposition box (vs 15.7).

• Everton’s second-half transformation was remarkable. After failing to register a single shot on target before the break, they produced 16 shots with 5 on target in the second half alone. Their key attacking metrics all far exceeded season averages: 1.57 xG (vs 1.00), 18 shots (vs 8.9), 33 touches in the opposition box (vs 17.9), and 13 chances created (vs 6.4). It was Everton’s most aggressive attacking display in weeks – the only frustration was that it came after falling three goals behind.

Implications

• Liverpool remain in 10th on 17 points – now eight clear of Leicester. Since starting 2026 rock bottom, Taylor’s side have taken 13 points from seven matches, losing only to Manchester United and Chelsea.

• City were simply too dominant. Their 2.01 xG yielded three goals from 15 shots, backed by 62% possession and 34 touches in the opposition box — more than double United’s 14. Lauren Hemp struck the crossbar, and Rebecca Knaak saw a goal harshly disallowed, meaning the true gulf in quality was even greater than the 3–0 scoreline suggested.

Expected Points – MW19: Arsenal Overtake Chelsea, Liverpool Surge, Leicester Sink Further

The biggest xPts story of Matchweek 19 is the positional swap at the top of the expected table. Arsenal’s 2.83 xG against Spurs lifts them to 36.64 xPts, pushing them past Chelsea (36.36) into second place. Their underlying trajectory has been the league’s best for weeks: the strongest defensive record (12.67 xGA), an xGD of +22.17 (second only to City), and two games in hand. Right now, Arsenal look the most dangerous team in the UWCL qualification race — by a considerable margin.

Manchester City extended their lead to 41.02 xPts, 4.38 clear of Arsenal. Their cumulative xGF of 50.30 is the highest in the league by a distance — nearly 12 more than Chelsea’s 38.68 in second. Chelsea slipped behind Arsenal in expected points despite climbing to second in the actual table on 40 points, a divergence that reflects their consistent overperformance this season.

Liverpool were the biggest movers in the bottom half, climbing to eighth (21.74 xPts) above Aston Villa (21.39). Their underlying numbers have looked closer to mid-table than relegation level for weeks. Brighton also rose one place to fifth (25.95), swapping with Tottenham (24.50) after Spurs’ 0.52 xG showing at Arsenal — their lowest expected output of the season.

At the bottom, Leicester sit on 13.91 xPts, 2.38 behind West Ham (16.29). The gap remains bridgeable in theory, but Leicester’s cumulative 12.28 xGF — by far the lowest in the division — underlines their main problem: they simply don’t create enough to generate the results needed to close it.

Today’s 4–3 defeat at Chelsea will go down as another Villa loss – their 10th of the season – but it also marked the moment Kirsty Hanson’s individual campaign crossed from impressive into historic territory.

Two goals in four first-half minutes – on the 31st and 35th – took her season tally to 12. That matches the total that won Khadija Shaw and Alessia Russo the joint Golden Boot last season. There are still three games left to play.

The Numbers Behind the Season

Let’s start with the stat that best captures Hanson’s importance to this Villa side: she has scored 12 of their 27 WSL goals this season. That’s 44% – nearly half of her team’s entire attacking output coming from a single player.
